I tried one of these rinses a few weeks back Al when I had a real bad sinus infection. It only worsen the situation to the point I had to go to the dr for antibiotics & a steroid shot.

When I did the rinse, I guess some of residue remained in my nasal passages thereby causing more infection & gunk in there. Even up to 2 or 3 days after doing the rinse, everytime I bent my head down, bloody discharge would come out of my nose! It was terrible!

Same thing happened to hubby after he tried the neti pot a few times.

I'm sure that the netti pot thing would trash my already weird sinuses....otherwise it sounds like a good occasional hygiene maintenance kind of thing when a flu or cold is coming on.

Just use a regular old saline nasal spray, just the saline solution. You can use that as often as needed. It moisturizes your nasal cavity. Some people also use petroleum jelly and swab the inside of their noses lightly with it.

I also tried the nasal rinses. A couple of times, the water was a tad too cold, and it went up into the sinus cavity above my upper teeth and gave me the absolute worst pain ever for about 15 minutes. Brought tears to my eyes.

I agree if you can't get all the water out, it could cause infections, especially if you already have a cold.

But some people swear by this method (neti pot), and some doctors too.

I think I would buy or build an insulated noise-reduction box cover for the machine for overnight use.

Can't do that! It needs to be in an unenclosed area so that it can filter the incoming air and expell the exhaust.

I remember in one of my offices having a cover built for my large computer printer and it had cut outs for the fan, but I guess the noise level would still be too high for a bedroom. Oh well.

Norma, you keep that noisy thing in the same room as you are. I had mine in the next room get longer tubing if you have to that thing will keep you up all night. That should help a little. Ross's old clunker looks like my old one those things were loud!!
Let me know how the longer tubing works out.

My Nasal Rinse Plastic Bottle holds 1 cup of water.
I preheat 1 cup of Distilled Water in the MicroWave for 20 to 30 seconds, then pour into the plastic bottle (with One Salt Pack already emptied into the bottle), shake and use.

From Norma's experience, it sounds like it works better BEFORE you become completely stopped up.

My ENT also recommends the Saline Spray to moisten the nasal cavity. It seems to help open up a swollen nose.
