Hi Mary:

Thanks for posting this thread. My sense with Rebecca is that she's pushing too hard-- the only time I've seen her mention it is after running. I'll ask our new pc if he's ever heard of it (we see him Tues.) I've mentioned it before to two different pc's because I thought it was a weird symptom, but neither one seemed to make much of it...

I'll bet PJ is the closest to the truth. Small capillaries breaking in the lungs under stress seems the most plausible. Brilliant deducing, Sherlock! I also have the feeling that this isn't something to worry about. If I get some time today I'll see if I can google up something.
 
If that is an answer, then one of the mechanisms involved might be secondary pulmonary hypertension, which is a common companion for valve problems, due to back pressure from leakages or stenosis. The same bronchial capillaries that can break from illnesses like coughing or bronchitis would potentially be under higher blood pressure than they were designed to hold. This extra tension might make them more brittle.
