Sometimes I feel like I'm the only "nostalgic" person. People say to "not look back", "move forward" and "look to the future". Yet, here I am ... wanting to own older cars ... watch older TV shows ... listen to older music.

Don't get me wrong ... I enjoy the smell of a new car ... seeing favorite actors/actresses in new roles ... and the sensation of hearing a new song for the first time, realizing just how "perfectly" that new song fits in with life at the moment. I've driven an '06 Dodge Charger, an '06 Chevrolet impala, and an '06 Chevrolet malibu. While I'd choose the Charger, none of them evoke the feelings I have driving around in any of my older Chevrolet Monte Carlos. It's so cool to see Michael J Fox and Candace Bergen on Boston Legal ... or Felicity Huffman on Desperate Housewives ... or Judi Dench in James Bond movies ... or Alissa Mylano on Charmed. But, I'd much rather watch Family Ties, Murphy Brown, The Adventures of Superman, As Time Goes By, or Who's The Boss?, along with other favorites like Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, etc. Heh...as for music, The Fray's "Over My Head" or Collective Soul's "Feeling Better Now" or Rascall Flat's "What Hurts The Most" or Rebecca Lynn Howard's "Forgive" all speak to me just as much as the older songs I played on my radio show in April.

Still, for whatever reason, the new things just don't capture my complete attention as old things....

I love old cars. That's no secret, since I own 1 of each of the 1st four generations of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. And, while I'm a "Monte Carlo holic", I love seeing and driving other old cars, too. I enjoy seeing the Chargers of old ... the Mustangs of old ... the Caprice Classics/Impalas of old ... etc. Heck, while I want to add a MC SS to my family of MCs "someday", I'd also love to own a 1975 Chevrolet Caprice Classic convertible ... and a handful of other old cars.

Almost a month ago, I was shopping for gifts for my sister and her husband for their birthdays. As I strolled through the aisles at the local WalMart, hunting down DVDs of TV shows, I happened to notice a bunch of older TV series that I'd love to have ... and remember fondly, even if the shows were a bit "hokey" at best. If I bought each TV show DVD I wanted, I wouldn't have room for much else on my shelves ... let alone much cash left to my name.

I even prefer these commercials:

or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSZ_K4cWMKI&search=GM AM Radio
or

As for music, one look at the playlist (see below) from the 4 "CD Showcases" I hosted in April "tell the tale". I still don't know if I'll be back on the airwaves or not (waiting to hear back from some companies about sponsorships), but thanks to Stephen M (carnuts.us and tripleplate.com), I have each of the complete 4 shows so I can listen to 'em (and share 'em with ya'll, if you like).... In fact, I was listening to one of 'em as I was thinking of/writing this topic/theme.....hmmm....

*sighs*

So, AM I the only "nostalgic" one? Or, do I just need a girlfriend? Naaahhhh ;). OR, maybe I need more hobbies? No ... I have enough (traveling/meeting people, cars, music, computers, legos, HO scale train, writing, among others). Or, better yet, perhaps I just need a new/better job ... so I can get more sleep so I'm not up late at night thinkin' about this stuff ... he he he ;).

Heh...I'd just like a better "mix" of old and new, especially when it comes to music on the radio.

"There's a place for memories" ... Gary Morris ... 'Don't Look Back'

Nothing wrong with nostalgia. I like to think "look to the future but don't forget the past". I must say I haven't come accross most of the songs on the playlist before so they may not have made it outside the US. Like you I am interested in older cars however I wouldn't want to drive one daily. :)

Hey Cort! I loved your playlist and the huge variety you have. I wish more radio stations would play a larger variety of music, with a lot more of the older stuff mixed in. A perfect station to me would have a lot of the older stuff-both pop and country together. We have one station sort of like that here in KC--they play a variety of music (but not country) but I wish they played more older stuff. And I think older tv is WAY better that what is out there now.....;) Deb

Cort,
I'm nostalgic too.
But in my case, there's a feeling of loss that accompanies it, so I try not to dwell there.
If I could turn back time, I would.
Since I can't, I try to keep moving forward.

Can't look very far ahead these days

Can't look very far ahead these days

because I,m getting to the age where looking back is about all there is.
I like your playlist since I really enjoy a lot of country music, especially from the 80's and 90's.
I would like to see you add Matchbox by Carl Perkins, always one of my favorites.
But the cars, well............mid-seventies still seem like late model cars to me.
I have to go back to the forties and fifties, that's where I grew up.

Cort. You are certainly not alone in your love of nostalgia!! America felt like a safer place in those days and the comfort of memories (and selective memory tends to banish the bad elements) will of course make a person feel better!!

By extending your nostalgic interests beyond the realm of automobiles, you might meet some new people. Second hand stores abound, kitchy places where all kinds of people come to furnish their homes or decorate their personalities!

Thanks for that link to the AM Radio ad. I LOVE that ad. Very modern music, though, in that ad....yet somehow reflective of the times. I hadn't seen the second one. We're on our 4th Saab and it's been somewhat sad to watch the change in them.....some things for the better, mostly not. Born of Jets. Okay. whatever! Young women like to haul ass, too!! All these manipulative ad campaigns. Be strong and hold on to your own feelings.....don't let the ad agencies tell you what you are supposed to like and not like!!

Thanks for sharing your playlist! I like country, but rarely listen to it so I did not recognize more than the singers. I'm just an old rocker from the beginning. Mostly AM during the formative years!! Lots of soul, too. (Washington DC)....lots.

I think it's awsome that you work hard to keep quality alive. Don't give it up!!

:) Marguerite

I enjoyed skimming through your list. I'll take a closer look later. I am a big music nostaglia fan, though not nearly as knowledgeable as you. As a young man, I really followed all of the charts and listened to count downs. I used to have a lot of Chicago's WLS playlists from the 70's; I wish I had hung on to them; they're collectors items now. I found them on the web and reminisce every now and then. Thanks for the diversion from everyday life.

*grins*

Well, glad I'm NOT the only one ... sometimes, tho, I sure feel as if I am.... Heck, my "nostalgic attitude" extends to learning about history and seeing pictures of older buildings, people, and places. Sunday afternoon, I read an article in our local paper about a factory closing here in Elgin ... and was interested to learn some of the history behind it, as well as learning that the former Gail Borden (think milk products) factory across the street was closed, in part, due to a report by ABC-TV's Geraldo Rivera, back when Rivera was a reporter for 20/20....

On top of that, our local library has been offering evening programs in May that I hope to get a copy of on video tape, including a look back at Elgin's architectural heritage, a book and film about Elgin and the Elgin National Watch Company, and a nostalgic look at rural life.

*shrugs*

Perhaps I was just born in the wrong decade ;).

OldManEmu,

What is your favorite older car? And, why not drive one daily!?!?!? he hehe

Deb,

I'm right there with you ... wishing radio stations would play more of the older stuff ... along with the new stuff ... ya know, more of a balance!

Mary,

I certainly understand what you mean. And, perhaps, that's why I feel "all alone" sometimes in my nostalgicism (is that even a word?!). Sometimes, being nostalgic reminds me of my Gram and Gramps ... and how they can't share "their days" with me anymore :(.

Rich,

He he he...I know a few of my car buddies who are in the same boat as you ... they think my MCs are "new fangled" ... where the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air is prime "old" car to them ;). He he he. Glad you liked the playlist :).

Marguerite,

How'd you know posting this was meant to grab others' attentions ... and share another interest? ;). he he he. Seriously, though, I've found way too often that people have a lot more in common than a heart surgery or car or whatever.... And, you're welcome for the links and playlists ... glad you enjoyed 'em :). Oh ... and, I never give up ;). He he he

Wise,

You are welcome, my friend. Sometimes, I can get lost in reading through old magazines or looking at old pictures ... so much so that it seems as if I've only been looking for maybe 15 minutes ... when, in reality, 2 hours have skiipped by me without me noticing. Yep, Chicago's WLS was famous "back then". Did you know that WLS stood for World's Largest Store? And, it was owned by Sears. Also, are you aware of WSM's Grand Ole Opry ... the longest running radio show in US history? Well, WLS had one first ... the Barn Dance (er, I think that was the name of it). And, take your time reading through the playlist, etc. You have other things going on right now, I know :(.

Cort -

Cort -

You are just an "old soul." I have thought that way about myself sometimes. If I believed in reincarnation (which I don't) I could swear I have lived in other time periods (because of my affinity for "old" things). It is all very fascinating what each of us is drawn to and why we love certain things of this world.

Cort, you're also a hopeless romantic and yes, you do need a girlfriend!! You are so darned cute - I don't understand what is taking "her" so long to find you!! :)

Christina L

Cort,

Don't forget all the fun there is to be had when looking at old buildings and architecture. Yes, I'm first a gear-head (first car was a 1953 Studebaker), but over my younger years my dad was in the heating business in Chicago. I used to work with him on the weekends, and found it absolutely fascinating to see how Chicago and suburban buildings used to be built. Some of the old architecture is wonderful, and some of the old building systems (electrical, heating, plumbing) are really cool to see.

And yes, I too have my own sort of wierd nostalgia interest -- I still write with old fashoined fountain pens that fill from a bottle of ink. Some of mine are actually refurbished antiques from the 1920's and before, and they work as well today as they did back then.

Ah, well, life was slower, and somehow looking back makes it seem that it was nicer, too.

Thanks for the memories. . .

No, I did know the other info about WLS. Interesting! Did it start as a country station?

Loved your list.. actually remembered most of them.. scary... being an almost 40 chic (not quite there), I love watching TV Land and Halmark for the old shows..(used to drive the ex crazy - not enough blood and guts I guess) DVDs - love Murphy Brown, have the first season.. plus some others.. music, I would have to give recognition to an old friend who was "in a band" locally who played alot of the 70's years ago.. country influence would have to have come from living in dallas for a while.. I guess i've always considered myself an ecletic chica.. cars, I only have one favorite.. 69-71 dodge charger. even a woman can appreciate a great muscle car of days gone by...

keep the lists coming...

Chris

*chuckles*

Ya know ... I needed to read this tonight ... been a rough day.

Anyway.....

Christina,

I'm not sure why it is taking "her" so long to find me either ... it's not like I'm hiding in a cave ;). He he he...and, of course, thank you ;).

Steve,

You are welcome! I agree about architecture. One thing I love to do as I'm driving around is look at houses and other buildings ... and "visualize" what might they be styled like inside. One of the programs at our local library that I missed and hope to see on tape when the copies become available was a program on Elgin's architectual heritage/history.

Wise,

I'm not sure about the answer to your question. I don't believe it was, but it very well could've been. I know WMAQ in Chicago was country. I remember hearing Nancy Turner and many other Chicago area country personalities on that station before they jumped to FM, where, at one point, one could find 99.5, 104.3 and 98.3 as Chicago area country stations. WMAQ eventually became an all-news station, before it "dissolved" a few years ago. Now, WSCR "The Score" is housed on WMAQ's former AM 670 frequency. 104.3 switched to oldies ... and now is Jack FM. 94.7, at one point, was Z95 (rock'n'roll, more or less), then switched to Kicks Country for a while (a basic copy of 99.5), which didn't last long (I still say if they had played the older country music, they'd be still country now), when they switched to "The Zone" ... and, now, they are Chicago's "True Oldies Channel".

*sighs*

Trying to keep track of Chicago radio stations is like a soap opera ;).

Chris,

Very glad you enjoyed the lists. As for those Chargers you mentioned ... absolutely! I'll take a '69 Charger anyday! He he he ... music and TV just go together :).

ok, this thread has been creating some flashback memories of my own.... of all the music you listed, Cort, i'm surprised there's no doo-***.. music from the 60's.. or more recently, Joss Stone - she's a main stay on my cd player at work, sultry, soulful, "Right to be Wrong" and "You Had Me" are two of my favorites..i'm flashing back to the days of my friends' local band - hanging out, hearing all the great music of the 60's, 70's and 80's at their gigs, helping DJ everyone once in a while - he still has his very first car - 69-71 nova (not quite sure of the year)...sits in the garage, claims his wife will go before his car does.. I think he starts the engine once or twice a year.. I just moved into my own place, think I need to dig out my old VHS tapes of yesteryear and have a peaceful weekend reminincing.. aaahhh, those were the days..

Chris

Of course, if you REALLY want to crank up the "way-back machine" you can bring back the Big Band swing masters like Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey and their comtemporaries. I still enjoy some of the modern recordings of their arrangements.

But then, I also enjoy Dixieland and Ragtime. . . must have been born in multiple generations. . . might explain that nasty multiple personality syndrome. . . grumble, grumble.

I remember listening to WLS when the Beatles first came to the US. That was the early 60's; anyone remember back before that?

AHHH - the Beatles. I saw them in Cincinnati at the old Crosley Field (where the Reds use to play before all the fancy stadiums were built) in 1966. I was in line for tickets at 6AM. Went to the concert and it got rained out. Had to go back the next afternoon for a "shortened" concert because they were on their way to LA later that day. It was still exciting and something I will always remember. I still have the local newspaper from that day.;) :D
Other concerts - Elvis, The Four Seasons, Lovin' Spoonful, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Buffalo Springfield. Haven't been to a concert in years and really miss the thrill but I no longer like crowds.:(

Sweet! Someone else who still has their first car! I still have my 1st car ... my 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau. BUT ... I get it out and drive it during the summer months :).

And, Chris, hope you have/had a wonderful weekend of reminiscing! It can be quite fun!

*grins*

Who knew this thread would create such buzz ;).

Favourite older road car would have to be the Mercedes Benz 300SL 1954-57. They tend to be in private collections and museums and rarely driven as they are so valuable. I am a great admirer of Art Deco styling, I like the style of Cords of the late 1930, as I think they are the Auto embodiment of Art Deco, even though they are nothing special technically. :)

Emu -- Do you mean the famous "Gull Wing" Mercedes? What a classic design. When we bought our house, the previous owner had a silver gull-wing, unrestored, in the garage. I tried to get him to sell it with the house, with a lot of money added to the house price, but he whisked that car out of the garage before I could even think again.
