Hello all....well today they withdrew about 2 liters of fluid from Nick's lung and his breathing is better..the tube is still in place and they may try to withdraw whatever is left tomorrow...Nick will be given a stress echo test either Monday or Tuesday to see how much of the heart is functioning. They will then make a determination on whether to have the surgery or not..I don't want to sound like it is hopeless because it never is with Him by our side. In fact my mantra is "All is well and getting weller"....I keep repeating that in my head...I expect great things and am never disappointed...However, I will never turn away extra prayer and positive, healing thoughts...Thank you for all you do.....Kathy

Hi,
Hope Nick is doing better. I shall continue to send up my prayers. Don't forget, "If HE brings you to it, HE will bring you through it". Hugs to you and your family

Hate to hear all the stress and worry you all are going through! Would like to add my prayers to everyone elses that Nick will feel better and things will begin to look up for him!!

Nick has been transferred to Tufts/New England Med Ctr..he had a slight turnaround when they began the MILrinone drip and his organs started to function better. So he has been there since Friday night and they are talking about the L-VAD,(left ventricular assistive device), possibly doing it today...Hopefully this will be a bridge to a transplant. They may need to intubate him as well to get enough oxygen to his body. That is all I know for now. I would like to say THANK YOU all for your prayers and support. This has not been easy for any of us. But knowing the support is there helps out enormously. Thank you again.

Oh wow Kathy. I will be praying for Nick. I know that at this point the road he is on seems foggy and uncertain, but I know that your families faith will help him. The hugs and good vibes that I'm sending your way should arrive shortly. Can you feel um'? :)

Ok so here it is...once Nick got into Tufts, a day later he took a turn for the worse. we thought we were losing him. the docs and nurses there are awesome. they increased cardiac meds and it helped somewhat but not enough so they attached the "tandem heart" yesterday afternoon. His BP immediately increased to a safe point and over the last 24 hours his kidney function, liver function have come back. They did cultures this afternoon and found no infections...and since he has been stable for over 24 hours they see a "window of opportunity" for surgery. TOMORROW MORNING AT 7:00am he gets an AVR and an L-VAD!! Please pray that he is strong enough to withstand this!!! thank you everyone..it has been such an emotional time for my whole family...i will keep you updated....

Sounds like Nick is in good hands. Praying for successful surgery tomorrow. Thank you for updating us.
Looking forward to hearing from you tomorrow. Get some rest !

Well, i haven't posted since 6/19/11 because our lives have been on a horrendous roller coaster ride. My brother passed away on July 20, 2011. He fought a good fight at Tufts. In a nutshell, shortly after arriving at Tufts he was put on the Tandem Heart pump for two days to give his heart at rest. On July 22, surgery was performed and the aortic valve was replaced by a cow valve and the L-VAD was attached. His heart was working perfectly. After a week, Nick was sitting up and having conversations and feeling "terrific", (his statement)..On July 3 he suffered a major bleed in his stomach from a huge ulcer (due to large doses of blood thinners). He was given 10 units of blood. He fought off sepsis and kidney and liver malfunctions. He was making small progresses but his kidneys were not coming back so they put him on continuous dialysis for about 2 weeks. Still he continued to make baby steps towards recovery, that is up until July 19 when sepsis and acidosis both set in. A meeting with doctors on July 20 only gave Nick a less that 1% chance of survival and if he did he would not have any kind of quality of life that he enjoyed prior to being sick. We then decided to stop all medical procedures immediately. We saw him, loved him, and told him that it was alright if he wanted the suffering to end, that the rest would be his decision and we would understand. The nurses only removed the dialysis and some of the IV's, the cardiologist had not yet come down to turn off the L-VAD. He made his transition very peacefully, almost as if he was waiting for our OK to go. We buried him this morning. And I am feeling like I have been inside a tornado, being tossed about, tired but unable to sleep with the thoughts of him running through my head. I want to thank you all for what you do for so many. Oh, how I wish this was a success story..Please keep on keeping on. With my utmost thanks, Kathy

So sorry for the loss of Nick

I was so rooting for him to make a recovery. How very sad. I am glad he had your love and support through this terrible time. May he rest in peace and may your family find peace, too.

Kathy, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. I'm sure it's been a very trying time for you all. I hope he's found some peace.
