I have been watching my aortic valve for a few years. Three weeks ago I found out that that it would need to be replaced at a ripe old age of 43 (thinking a lot later in life) so a shock to me and my family. I found this forum a couple of days later after reading the book "the patient's guide to heart valve surgery". I had no signs of the valve getting worst in fact I did 30 minutes of cardio work out the morning of my appointment with my cardiologist. I have read, learned a lot and enjoyed the forum over the last couple of weeks, the questions to the surgeon was very useful. So I have already decided to go with a mechanical ATS valve and the surgery will be October 6 (so go "deano89" I will be there with you). Thanks for everything even though I never posted before this a great forum for both the patient and everyone in the family.

Welcome to VR.com. You have found a place full of information and friends. Feel free to ask any questions as you prepare for your surgery as well as while you are healing.

This forum has been a life-saver to me!

Welcome! Glad you found us.

Since you're going mechanical, you want to read and view all the stickies in the Anticoagulation Forum here. The information there will help you determine whether or not your doctor is up to speed on Coumadin protocol.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions, no matter how silly or strange they may seem to you.

Welcome, glad you decided to join. We'll be here for you, ready answer questions or just hold your hand - and to welcome you to the other side of the mountain when you get there.

Welcome and enjoy the show :)

We hope all goes very well for you, before during and of course after surgery. Regardless of what you go through, more than likely, some else would have had similar experiences. We are all here for you. We all know what it like to be in "the waiting room."

Out of curiosity, I'm wondering what persuaded you to choose the ATS mechanical valve. Did you look at the others (Carbomedics, On-X, St. Jude)?

Welcome! I also have the ATS valve. I am 42 and now 3-1/2 weeks since surgery. Ask any questions to the forum. It helps to hear other peoples stories. I didnt find the forum until after i had the surgery and wish I found it before. The info and help in here can be priceless. Good luck.
