Got a free book yesterday at the newspaper where I work -- "Your Heart/An Owner's Guide," by John A. Elefteriades, MD., chief of cardiothoracic surgery & professor of surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, and Lawrence S. Cohen, M.D., the Ebeneezer K. Hunt professor of medicine @ Yale med school. (The book was sent to the newpaper in hopes of someone reviewing it. Publication date was 3/20/2007)
I read through the book while my friend drove us to a cat show in the Texas Panhandle (Amarillo). It's a very good book. Quite a bit about valves, tests, surgery, CABG, transplants, cardiac medications, a chapter about heart disease in women, pre-op & post-op. Information about warfarin is very good -- writers mention home testing.
The PR release that came with the book lists it at $20. Publisher is Prometheus Books, www.prometheusbooks.com
One slightly negative thing about the book is the photos -- B&W photos don't print well on non-slick paper. Photos could be much sharper.
BTW, seeing the device used to keep a patient's chest open during surgery may be TMI for some sensitive stomachs. But I didn't have a problem with seeing it.
