My nephew has decided to pass "GO," not collect $200 and go straight to his Ph.D. in computer science engineering & design.
He turned 22 this week, graduated a year ago summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Dallas, and began work on his MS. His mentor professor talked him out of the MS, saying he's got 36 hours applicable toward his Ph.D. and could spend the time on his Ph.D. that he'd be spending otherwise on his thesis.
So, he plans to hopefully get his Ph.D. in May or July of 2009.
This weekend he flies to Buffalo, N.Y., and will drive across into Canada to present a paper on someone else's research at a conference. Next month he flits off to Puerto Rico to present a paper on his own research, and sometime this summer he'll do the same again in Santa Fe, N.M. All on someone else's dime.
Last weekend he fixed a mundane problem with my notebook computer -- reinstalled the wireless card's driver, I think it was.
The night before John's surgery, he called to talk to John (catman) and to say that he would be praying for him.
