My nephew has decided to pass "GO," not collect $200 and go straight to his Ph.D. in computer science engineering & design.
He turned 22 this week, graduated a year ago summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Dallas, and began work on his MS. His mentor professor talked him out of the MS, saying he's got 36 hours applicable toward his Ph.D. and could spend the time on his Ph.D. that he'd be spending otherwise on his thesis.

So, he plans to hopefully get his Ph.D. in May or July of 2009.

This weekend he flies to Buffalo, N.Y., and will drive across into Canada to present a paper on someone else's research at a conference. Next month he flits off to Puerto Rico to present a paper on his own research, and sometime this summer he'll do the same again in Santa Fe, N.M. All on someone else's dime.

Last weekend he fixed a mundane problem with my notebook computer -- reinstalled the wireless card's driver, I think it was.

The night before John's surgery, he called to talk to John (catman) and to say that he would be praying for him. :)

Congratulations to your nephew!
I guess it was this time last year that we were at our son's graduation.
The gal next door is graduating from college tomorrow, so we sent a bottle of champagne over for their celebration.
It's a festive time of year.:)

Congratulations, Marsha!

Congratulations, Marsha!

I know you are proud of him just as you should be! Sounds like a very smart sweetheart of a nephew! Hugs. J.

P.s. congrats, Karlynn, too, on your daughter's graduation. Sounds like you approve of her beau! I'd love to hear about the selection process, too.

Shelby called and her boyfriend made it into Special Forces. 170 of the men didn't make it to the end of the process and only 1/3 of those left were selected. Juan said that they woke them all up at 4 this morning divided them into 3 groups and put them in rooms standing in formation. He said they started blasting the Green Beret theme music in his room and congratulated them all, so they all knew they'd made it. I do know his final test was a 33 mile hike with full ruck sack (over 60 lbs of "stuff") and it had to be completed in less than 10 hours. He had his intake interview and will find out soon what unit he's placed in. Then it's a year of training before he gets his Green Beret.

Karlynn:

Tell Shelby congratulations on her boyfriend's achievement. How wonderful!!
And congratulations on your daughter's graduation. A 3.9 is spectacular!!!

Dennis:

Don't think my nephew has ever been to New Mexico. I think he'll enjoy the trip. I know he's excited about all 3 trips.
The conferences he's going to are all biomedical meetings. That's his area of interest, using wireless communication.
