Hi, all--

Here's a brief update on my mom--sorry I haven't posted about her lately.

Mom came home a week ago tomorrow, and is in not very good shape. Physically, she's OK, but mentally she is in poor shape. She seems depressed, is anxious, and is afraid to do what she needs to do to get better: walk, eat well, stay hydrated. My dad hired a home care professional to stay with her throughout the day, but my mom is so fearful of everything that she's inhibiting herself. Given, this was a major surgery she had--even more major than my surgery--but she has to do something. I'm worried that if she doesn't, she'll die.

My dad, older brother, husband, and the rest of my family concur that she needs something to help her work through her mental block. I think most of us here know that post-op depression/anxiety happens, but this is major.

I will call my mom's GP tomorrow to let her know what's going on. And, I'll keep you updated on how mom progresses. Please keep her in your prayers.

Thanks from my heart,
Debi

Debi, I'm sorry your mom is having such a tough time. That is a really big surgery she had and then w/ her diagnosis, I can only imagine the depression/anxiety and every other emotion and fear she mst be going thru. I'm glad you are calling her GP and hope he can help her thru this rough spot. (and I'm glad for you all the family agree she could use a little help, it's so much better for you when everybody is on the same page).
I'm sorry I don't really know much about you and your Mom's personal things, but does she go to church? If so maybe someone from there can stop by and talk to her, that way it might be someone she feels really comfortable talking and opening up to. I will keep you all in my prayers.
Lyn

Debi,

Sending Prayers and Best Wishes for your Mom.
I would have to agree with Lyn that it is probably a combination of both physically recuperating from the major surgery she had and emotionally trying to cope with the reality of her cancer diagnosis, what all happened to her in such a short time and what lies ahead. You are wise to call and let her GP know what is going on. I hope that she is able to offer an explanation or solution.
It is not easy when it is your Mom or Dad who is ill so I am also sending you a ((((((((BIG HUG))))))) to help you in the days to come. Your Mom is lucky to have you watching over her.

Take Care!
Susie

Hi Debi,

Hope things look brighter soon. I will keep your mom in my thoughts and prayers. Is she able to attend any physical theropy / rehabilitation classes? Perhaps interacting with others in a similar situation will help her get out of the doldrums.

Deb,
Many times the anesthesia used during the surgery can be a cause of mental confusion which spirals into more issues. I know of several cases. I would question the doctor about this possibility.

It's tough. Sorry to hear it's that bad. I try to place myself in her shoes to see how I feel and it's pretty scary. You have my prayers.

I'm sorry your mother is in this condition. I learned how head strong my mother is when she was the most ill. Many times when you're frustrated with someone and want to them to take action, that's exactly when they won't. I'm not saying this is your case, but with my mother I had to learn to stay quiet and just pray for her. In the long run she came around and did most of the things she needed to do to improve. I pray that your mother will be prompted to action from within, and with a little divine nudge maybe. Best wishes and prayers being sent your way too; I know it's difficult.

Your mom will be in my prayers. Is there a possibility that the surgery itself has something to do with her lack of appetite? Have you discussed this with the doctor and the possibility that an appetite stimulant could be given to her?

I am so sorry to hear that she is having a rough time of it. Tell her us old ladies are made of strong stuff and we can do it. If she can just realize that she needs to make the most of her time in this world, then she will try harder. That keeps me goin - plus very supportive children.

Bad news...

Bad news...

Mom's blood sugar went up to 500 this afternoon and she was rushed to the hospital. She also has an infection where she still has her drainage tube. She's not doing very well and is in the ER right now awaiting transfer back to USC. Please keep her in your prayers. Thanks,

Debi
