Congratulations on your new buddy...
Not only are the people on this site really nice, but they are animal lovers as as well!
All of the the dogs and cats that I've had in my life I've rescued one way or another. My last dog (German Shepard) I rescued from Wall Street had him for 10 great years, (RIP Scruffy 07/03/2008). My prior dogs have come from the North Shore Animal League. As soon as I am up to it (still recovering) I plan on rescuing 2 small breed dogs.
Congratulations again........

*sigh*

Bad news. Mo isn't coming tomorrow. She was all set to go, but she suddenly looked pudgy. After a trip to the clinic, it turns out she has - well, basically, a dog's version of ascites. She's holding fluids after the insult of the heartworm treatment, which was otherwise successful. She's on what I think is a version of Vasopril, prednisone or cortisone, an antibiotic (just in case), and...our old friend Lasix.

She wasn't well enough to travel, and is at risk right now for throwing clots or otherwise not making it through the next few days. Her activity level seems good. My guess is that with the Lasix, she'll either pick up pretty quickly, or the news won't be good.

We're bummed out. We can't reach out to her or help. We just hope she pulls though again. She was so close.

oh, no. I am so sorry. poor little one. you were so excited to have her with you. dont lose hope, tho. son and DIL have one that was treated and she is just fine. they rescued her, treated her and she's been their baby for years now. We will hold fast til we hear from you.

Yes, heartworm treatment in dogs is rough (no pun intended)....But, Bostons are terriers,
a very durable category of dog and hopefully she will show everyone exactly how strong she can be.
Cyberspace hugs going out to her. :)

Bob, I'm sending up a prayer for your little Mo. Two of my brothers each have two recued dogs, another has had rescued cats, and several friends have wonderful dogs from rescue clinics. Your valve bro, Brian

Our next-door neighbors moved December from Hawaii and promptly went to the local humane society. The dog they adopted was being treated for heartworms, and wasn't doing particularly well. The only exercise she was allowed was to go out to the yard briefly, no running, playing.

Today's she's a very healthy dog. Loves to scoot under the split-rail fence between our lots and play with the cactus in our yard!

Thank you for so much good will toward poor little Mo. Got a very brief email from the shelter saying that the lasix is starting to work, and it appears that she's breathing a bit better. Hopefully, things will stay their course and she will improve quickly. She is still on severely limited exercise, as Marsha (Catwoman) pointed out. She has about a month to go on that.

Heartworms are not little tiny parasites. They are nasty worms up to a foot or so long that eat into the heart and lungs. It's amazing that anythng that gets them can be cured at all. Even when they've been killed off, they can still do their evil work by causing clots and other issues as the body tries to flush them out. Disgusting!

I know they can't have time to keep contacting me about Mo, but I'm eagerly awaiting more news. Assuming things go well, it now looks like the pickup date will be moved out until October 27.

Best wishes,

YAY! Great news that she is gettin better! I have 1 rescue cat, and one that someone dumped and another from a girl who tends to not spay or neuter and therefore has many unwanted ones to give away. I suggested cutting back on he worlds unwanted pets by a simple operation but don't know if I made a difference.

My cats are Cinder, Princess Grace kelly, and Daphne Gail, they wish Mo the best!

Bob, it will be hard to wait for another 4 weeks, but it's probably best if Mo gains her strength and comes to you in better health. :)
Maybe the shelter has a volunteer who would be kind enough to share some more pics and updates with you.
