How much weight do I need to lose? I am 5'4" and weigh 146 lbs. My weight is evenly distributed (no big hips, legs or stomach). For some reason, I don't appear to weigh but about 130 lbs. My ribs are already showing and when the guy did my echo my cardiologist said I was very skinny (she could see my ribs under the paper gown).
However, according to the BMI chart, I am overweight."

I don't know that you do need to lose any weight; however, I'm also 5'4" and lost weight about ten years ago that put me down to 130. I could tell a significant difference in the knee pain I was having, and my BP was fairly constant at 100/65.
My weight has ranged from 104 to 148 over my adult lifetime, and my cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and heart rate have fluctuated accordingly.
Have you asked your doctor why she thinks you need to lose weight? If she can't give you a satisfactory answer, then I wouldn't worry about it.

She didn't tell me to lose weight. In fact, she said I was skinny. But, I told her I would be willing to lose weight and modify my diet if it meant not taking any pills.

I know I am "late" adding my 2 cents worth...but here goes anyway :)

I am 5 ft 7 in tall and 130 lbs. which is around the middle range of perfect BMI BUT I look SCRAWNY my bones poke out everywhere

I am going to add that these BMI charts are a general guide to use , with all these charts you should take into account your bone-structure,..
So, if you are a broad-big boned person (even if youre only 5 foot 4) you can still have thick/strong bones which would be heavier than others. I personally reckon that if you have bones poking out like mine you wouldnt want to lose much weight...
some people just have heavier-builds than others :D

Now natural Blood-pressure LOWERERS :D ,,,My hubby swears by Garlic as do many form European countiries , the Mediteranian diet has often been "proposed" as a contributing factor to the often excellent heart-health of these people, my hubby is a case in point...( Not Fair!) :p :D

I shall have a look thru my herbal books and see what else they reccomend so you can discuss it with your care-giver :) .

My husband suggested garlic, as well. Thanks for the tip. :)
