Carolyn,
So May 10 is going to be a very good day for you. The begining of your healthier life. Will keep you close in prayer.

You'll be in excellent hands, Carolyn. I look forward to hearing everything went great. Best of luck!

Is a sternotomy the good old-fashioned split-em-open-like-a-chicken approach to OHS? If so, that's what I got with my mitral replacement, and it's not that bad. Good luck!

Notice to all valvers,

In my upcoming presurgery thread, please refrain from using blatantly unsettling expressions to describe details of my imminent procedure. This includes the overly descriptive verbs crack, pop or split. It also pertains to the mention of certain food preparation methods, especially those involving crabs or chickens.

Let it be known that this language, when used in the context of open heart surgery, tends to elicit vivid imagery in our already fragile mindset and serves only to further heighten the fight or flight response.

Thank you for your attention and have a nice day. :)

Carolyn, you sound ready and committed. That's GOOD.

In the mean time, try to occupy your mind with other thoughts. I'm looking forward to reading of your successful surgery.

See you on 'the other side'.

Best wishes,

'AL Capshaw'

Carolyn, best wishes and lots of cyber hugs to you as you head into your surgery. We're all pulling for you.

Just got back from my marathon day at CCF doing my pre-op clearance stuff. Labs, echo, EKG, CXR, visits with the cardiologist and surgeon, and anesthesia. I'm READY! I'll either get a carbomedics or a st jude valve, I think he'll decide when he sees what he has to work with. As I suspected, he's thinking about the minimally invasive approach but may have to do the full sternotomy. I also have an implant from my breast reconstruction that might be in the way when he opens me up--I told him to do what he needs to do with my heart and the heck with the implant. It's the least of my concerns right now.
A week from now my sister in law will be posting for me. I thought about having her call Ross but I think he has enough on his plate for right now! Either way, we'll let my VR family know what's going on.

You go girl! Will be thinking of you on the 10th with prayers. Had a similar case to yours a few weeks ago. Went smooth as silk and yours will too.

Good luck!

Good luck!

Hi Carolyn, you sound confident which's very important for the success of your operation.. I'm sure that your doctor will do a great job and you'll be back here in no time. I'll add you in my prayers and will be thinking of you on your BIG day. God bless you and take care.

Thanks!

Thanks!

thanks Randy, I appreciate your reminder. I already have a vivid picture in my head of what's going to happen ( I got to observe two OHS/CABG standing at the patient's head with the anesthesiologist while in nursing school) so I don't need any graphic descriptions to send my stomach into any stronger clutches of anxiety than I've already experienced. It's cute but not what I want to think of in terms of MY body (those explicit terms) I'm just waiting for the mouth sores and diarhhea to start. Maybe the xanax will counteract those!!

Good luck...you are going to be fine
