We had decided not to come due to John's family being killed in a car accident outside Chicago..few months back.. Male cousin, his wife and her mother. Too sad....If all the above had not happened we were considering coming and staying with them, ect..Friday, I received Jury duty..Guess? The week of Oct. 6th.  Last year..same thing..2 weeks after open -heart surgery. I went in on my cane to courthouse and told the clerk..I had open-heart surgery 2 weeks ago..and she said, so?  well..you need an excuse.   Of course..I called pcp and he wrote one for me....Now, I live in a very small county..courthouse..in square. NO parking..have to go early if not walk a mile, ect...My point to all members planning to attend. Don't open your mail:D :D :D The first week of Oct. and April is court.. Years back I got one for Easter week..  Had planned a great getaway for kids to California. Thank goodness..another small town. knew the Clerk of Court. Just told him. NO way..and he dismissed me..:D So..I'll be in court the week yall are having fun..:D Bonnie

I think if you can produce your receipt for airline tickets and hotel reservations they will put you back in the "pool". I do recall this happening to our family/mother years ago when we had a cruise booked. We still went ahead without a hitch.

If my clerk of court..saw me hobble in with a cane and said..so what?   Looking at summons now..it says..no less than 20 days prior and must have written verificatin by a physican:eek:  May be different in larger cities..but what a hassle. When I was excused that one time..I had lived in town (one horse) for 25 years and he was great.:D to excuse me. I have to go..but when lawyers question me..all I have to say.. My son has been in Law Enforcement for 13 years. Especially drugs Knocked the door down many times on crack houses...that's why my hair is grey.:D I have been summoned about 5 times and Hubby NEVER.   I vote..and think they get my name off voter's list..Hubby, too... but as a concerned American .must do what is right.:) bonnie

So sorry Bonnie that this American citizen "duty" is at such a bad time!

Funny thing, and something I do not understand, is that I am almost 48 years old, have lived in the same city for 48 years, vote in 95% of all elections, including primaries, and I have never received a jury summons! I would enjoy the opportunity to see what the judical system is all about! My husband is summoned approximately every three years, but not me. Interesting huh?

Ah, now you've done it

Ah, now you've done it

Kim, rest assured, now that you have taunted the great jury gods, your summons is being printed and delivered by courier to you front door tomorrow at 6AM. The first of many.

Bonnie,

Thanks for the offer! I'll get back with you! But, if Johnny's right, I should have my own opportunity right here in my home town rather shortly!

One of the times I was called, the courtroom was filled to the brim with people. The Clerk asked if any of us had a reason to be excused and sent her staff member around to those who had a hand raised. The man next to me said "I can't remember anything from one sentence to the next". The girl didn't want to take that, but he insisted that he truly could not - that he had a really bad memory problem and whatever was said went straight out of his mind. She excused him. I served on that one and enjoyed my term. It lasted a few short hours and was over. I truly enjoyed doing it and learning about the system. They even sent a check.

Bon, chances are that they won't even call on you. Many folks receive the summons, but few are called to serve. You can also say "I know the person on trial, and he/she's guilty as sin". Even the prosedcutor wouldn't want you.

In Florida, you are chosen for jury duty from drivers' licenses. Used to be from property tax rolls in one's home county. No more. Still the same people seem to be called year after year. At 65 you don't have to serve anymore, in Florida. I know you are not there yet, tho.
