Dick and Marsha, I agree... she originally wanted to recheck me next Monday, so one week later.. but I am leaving town on Sunday and don't have a home tester (obviously). Today she just wanted to make sure I was coming down, and she wants to test Friday b/c of being out of town next week. Also, I am on an antibiotic and she wants to see if that is causing my INR to go high. Normally we give it more time.. I don't know what another solution would be with my going out of town.

But, are you saying it is too drastic to only take 5 mg tonight?? I could take the 7.5 tonight instead.

Halley, I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I would stick with 7.5mg until you come home and then retest. Try to relax and get off this yo-yo.
How much longer are you on this antibiotic? And what is it exactly?

Hi Freddie,
The antibiotic is called doryx and I'm supposed to be on it for a couple of weeks. I actually did end up taking 7.5 last night instead of 5 and will take 7.5 again tonight. I like your idea! I'd say you're pretty sharp :) Thanks.

Halley:

Doryx is doxycycline. Don't think it would cause a problem, based on what Al Lodwick's website says:

Dear Halley,

You will find that whenever you add a different drug to your regimen of medications, your INR will reflect the changes & you will just have to learn to make adjustments as necessary.

I was on antibiotics a week or so ago for a bad cold & my INR was pretty erractic but I've gotten under control now that I'm off the antibiotics.

It sounds to me that you are getting the hang of things & are beginning to read the changes & make the adjustments accordingly.

I hope your INR levels stabilize soon. :)

If I could suggest, rather than play with the does, if you are on the high side, have you considered modifying your diet. I've been home monitoring with 5mg and gradualy increased my veggie intake each week by adding more daily greens like brocclie to my diet. Now with a decent diet of greens I'm pretty steay between 2.5 and 3.0.

Anotherwords, I found my veggie consumption level that balanced with my warfarin dose which I keep the same every day. It takes at least week of consistent consumption and tracking to see what point the IRN stabalizes at for a given amount of daily greens.

Hi Vincent,
Thanks so much for your reply. I am a vegetarian (except for fish on occasion) and my diet is very high in vit. K.. I regularly eat tofu, soy products and all kinds of dark greens - I'll even eat broccoli or spinach for a snack (weird I know!) I think I do get into trouble when I start eating less of that, like when I get really busy and start living on pb&j's.. but anyhow, I don't know that I can increase my veggie intake, but definitely don't want to decrease it. Thanks for the reminder!

I would not recommend modifying your diet to control your INR. Eat what you want to eat. Just don't drink a pot of home-grown peppermint tea and expect your INR to stay up. ;) (Gosh- wonder who did that????)

Halley - when you get back from vacation - check your INR and set a dose and then don't test for a week. I think your mixture of impending vacation and questions on what the antibiotic would do to your INR has caused you to be over-managed. This can cause unsettling fluctuations. But I do understand the worry that has caused this to be done. Been there, done that!

And ask Santa for a home tester. Having one would have diminished your worry and concern (and sense of being the one not in control) by about 95%. I know you REALLY want one - so I'll put that in my prayers for you. God bless.

I'm baaaack.... 4.4 today! But, at this point I am just like, whatever, OK... took 7.5 the last two nights and I think I'll keep with that dose. And, the funny thing is, after all this testing and worrying, we may be postponing the vacation anyways! We are going to the FLA panhandle and there is very cool weather coming for the days we'll be there. Not so bad... unless you have three kids to entertain b/c it's too cold to go swimming and mom ends up sitting by the pool freezing her butt off (can you tell I've done that before?) So, thinking of waiting 6 weeks till schools out and all this crazy spring weather has passed. Anyhow, I am not even worrying about today's resulsts, my new thing is when it's a little high, I should go around the corner to my favorite sushi joint and get some take-out. Not trying to control my INR with food, just looking for an excuse to eat my favorite lunch!

I agree with everything you said, Karlynn... I will be buying my own home tester this year! Thanks for the prayers, I really appreciate it.
