Not having a mechanical valve or A-fib, I do not take warfarin however I do take 100 mg low dose aspirin daily. Aspirin is to stop platelet aggregation. Enteric coated aspirin is something I have never noticed at the pharmacy, is it something that you have to ask for?

I don't know the availability of coated Aspirin in other contries.....but we can get Aspirin as well as generic brands in pharmacies or even department stores like Walmart. I buy a bottle of 180. They even go on sale!!

Aspirin is also recommended for patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) to help prevent heart attacks and strokes, usually at the 81mg Low Dose level. I've seen comments to the effect that 150-160 mg is the 'optimum' dose. Check with your Doctor before beginning an Aspriin Program!

In the early 1970's I was transferred to Columbus, Ohio and my doc there put me on both Coumadin AND asparin. After a couple of years I was transferred back to Louisville, KY and my Cardios had a FIT that I was taking asparin along with Coumadin and told me never to take asparin for any reason. Since then no doc has ever mentioned adding asparin to my regimen. It appears from these posts, the feeling about asparin usage has changed. I am a big believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but I will ask my cardio if there are advantages to my adding asparin.

Taking aspirin in addition to warfarin came up nine years ago with my cardiologist soon after the surgery. He thought about it a while and then advised against it. He said then there was no evidence that it did any good and if I did bleed or have any other complications it might be more difficult to sort it out. Aspirin doesn't work at all like warfarin; it makes the platelets less "sticky". My PCP also knowledgable agreed. I'm a little low on platelets anyhow and aspirin can make this worse. It ain't broke so far, even with the new knowledge I'm still going to leave aspirn alone.

I actually take an every other day dose of Plavix along with the Coumadin. My general doc prescribed it after some scary vision episodes. My cardio did say I could probably just switch to aspirin and get the same effect, but I'm going to stick with the Plavix since that's what I'm used to.

What is a TIA ?

I note a reference from some members talking about a TIA, excuse my ignorance, but what is a TIA ?

It stands for Transient Ischemic Attack and is, basically, a mini stroke.

Warfarin & Aspirin

Warfarin & Aspirin

I take 4mg Warfarin and 100mg coated aspirin daily, this gives me a stable INR of 2.5 to 3.0. Occasionally I drop the Aspirin, usually when i run out and havent got around to buying any. When i stop taking the aspirin I can almost guarantee that i will have a temporary vision problem, ( goes a bit wiggly) and lasts about five minutes, within three days of stopping the Aspirin.
Interested to know if other mechanical valve recipients have experienced this.

Hi Dave

I take 100mg aspirin a day as well as my warfarin, but I still get vision disturbances occasionally. In fact I had one episode today which lasted about 30 minutes. It is like shimmering stars on the edge of my field of vision.
Years ago I used to suffer from migraines and they would start like that - with an "aura" followed by the headache. Only now I get the aura but not the headache:confused:
I have a mechanical valve in the mitral position.

Whereabouts are you in NZ? I'm in Wairarapa.

Dave, I have gotten the squiggly line episodes for years now and still get them even though I'm on the Plavix. The gray out visual episodes I used to get right after my surgery have all but disappeared since I've been on Plavix.

Hi Bridgette
Maybe the eye events come as part of the package with a St Judes mitral valve. I used to get them quite regularly up to two years after surgery, but now only if i stop the Aspirin. Funny because I have been taking Warfarin and Aspirin since it was fitted.
I am in Dunedin.:)

Well, Katie takes aspirin and coumadin.

Well, Katie takes aspirin and coumadin.

I just take lots and lots of aspirin!:D Katie has been on baby aspirin since birth - 1/2 tab at first then bumped up to one full one. She only stops it ten days out from surgeries and when she runs a high fever affiliated with a suspected virus due to Reye syndrome risk. We, of course, added the coumadin almost two years ago. J. P.S. Don't even get me started on the inconsistencies and ineptness of the AHA. Half of Katie's defects aren't even listed on their site or in their CHD book.

gave up on aspirin

gave up on aspirin

My surgeon told me to take aspirin with my warfarin after surgery. I took aspirin for about 6 months after surgery and got my INR changed regularly. I had regular nose bleeds (about three times a week). When I got my INR checked my finger would bleed and fill up the bandaid and still bleed despite my INR reading 2.6. So without permission I stoped taking it and have been off the aspirin for two years now. I asked the tech who checks my INR and she said that from her research it was unclear if it was helpful. I'm going to ask my doc but I've not had a nose bleed for a very long time so I feel pretty good about being off that.

My INR has often been on the low side - 1.8 or there abouts on 5mg warfarin at my 4 weekly test. However everytime the warfarin dose has been upped (to 5-7 gms) I have had problems with blood in urine etc. My surgeon (who I think is wonderful) said, when I went a couple of weeks ago, that I should add 75mg of aspirin to 'see how it goes' - no problems I don't feel any different. I also take 2mg of Coversyl. Re-test in another two weeks. Perhaps I will have a differnt result?

Warfarin and aspirin

Warfarin and aspirin

Just to add my info to the mix. Since my AVR, my surgeon and cardio have had me on warfarin and 83 mg. of aspirin daily. I am currently taking 10mg. of warfarin daily, but not really stabilized, so don't know where it will end up. Also, they recommended using Tylenol for pain, though I haven't had to do that much.
Since I am still in the experimental phase;) , I have no idea how all this will end up. But in case someone is recording the info...

Chris:
Aspirin does not affect your INR. Aspirin affects the blood platelets. There isn't an easy test for blood platelets, so you just have to go on what is generally recommended.
