Bethann,

My son played baseball from the time he was 4 until he was 17. He was a pitcher from the time he was 11 and a short stop the whole time. He has no heart problems, but as a safety precaution, I made sure that he wore a heart guard whenever he was in the infield. It is protection against just what Doug was saying. If he got a line drive back at him in the chest, the heart guard helped spread out the impact and lessen the chance of the blow causing cardiac arrest. I don't see why your son would be at any greater risk because he's had a valve replaced.

Hope this helps.

Ross, you've made us think - which is really important. We remain determined to not overprotect, so I appreciate it.

Kids are gonna be kids. I don't care if your the best possible parent in the world, you cannot protect them all the time nor forever. The surgery was to allow life to continue, allow him to have the life he wants, not so much what the Doctors say. If they had it their way, we'd all be in rocking chairs on the porch, taking potshots at police cruisers with slingshots, because we are bored to death.

LOL, VERY funny! And I totally agree with this! :) And NO guilt BethAnn! There are many athletes, even currently as adults, that do not know that have a bicuspid valve per-say! Is amazing how heart defects CAN go undetected...
