Al:

I'll call the library at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine here in Fort Worth. It's about 3 miles from my office, more or less on the way home from work.

BTW, I'll be in Colorado Springs this weekend. There's a show at the Phil Long Expo Center, and I'm taking 2 cats, an American Shorthair and a blue Persian kitten named Jean Lafitte. The kitten looks too fluffy to be mistaken as a pirate, though....

I have an appt at 4:15 p.m. May 1 with a surgeon. I asked the woman making the appt if he's dealt with patients who have mechanical heart valves. Supposedly he has and she said, "It's not a problem."

Al or anyone: How do I get a copy of the article from the American Journal of Surgery?

Marsha, do you have adobe on your computer? Can you open pdf files? If so I've attached the article (or at least I'm trying to attach it). Ok, it didn't work. Ross, why can't we send pdf files through threads?

Marsha, I'll try to send it through the private message system.

Hope you can read it!

No PDF files allowed anymore. I don't know why, but that's how our host has it set up. Can you post it somewhere and link back to it?

bridging with Heparin

bridging with Heparin

I had shoulder surgery and had bridging therapy with Heparin. Had a bleed 4 days after surgery which they think was caused by the heparin.I think that it was caused by the regional block since I felt something pop in that area. I was in a teaching hospital so I had a team of cardiologists working with the orthopedic doctor.Had emergency surgery and still having problems with the radial nerve injury where the clot was. Bridging is important with us valvers.

Kris:

You can e-mail it to my private addy. I'll PM you with it. BTW, if you haven't discovered it already, you can send e-mails to members by clicking onto their Profile. Occasionally, a member may have decided not to set up for that.

If anyone else would like to see the article or would like me to check on another medical journal article (hopefully, not everyone ;) ) I'd be happy to send it through email to you. I work at a med school so it's usually easy to access articles for free.

Just think, some dentists still want to stop warfarin to clean the teeth.

Please look at http://www.warfarinfo.com/herniarepair.htm

If you don't mind, please refresh my memory on hernia types... I had one in my right groin that was repaired about 10 months before I had my valve replacement. It was done under the supervision of a couple of cardiologists and special attention was given to the condition of my heart throughout. They had intended to do the procedure under local anesthetic (because of my heart) but that didn't take very well so they knocked me out cold.
I was in the hospital as an outpatient for about 8 hours or so.

The surgeon I saw yesterday went to med school with my cardio. He said he would involve the cardio on my surgery. Normally, it's as day surgery at a day surgery center, but he said he would prefer to do it at a hospital. I stressed that I do NOT want to go off warfarin, and gave him a copy of the surgical journal article that Kris e-mailed me and thanked me for it.

I'll get it done but not right now. John's surgery has priority and I don't know how much sick time/vacation time I can spare the rest of this year. Will probably be done the first of next year.
