G'Day Jess

Its good to see another fellow sandgroper on the site!
Welcome aboard to this site and its wealth of information and great people.

I had an AVR at Mount Hospital under Dr David Andrews in November last year. A tad older than your good self at 39. Since then though I have cycled near on 4000km and begun running with a view to competing in triathlons - like so many other inspirational people on this site. The point being that although the operation is a significant event, life goes on and often continues with a better quality after the operation as it allows you to do things that, pre op, just were not sensible - or not achievable. Sure there are some limitations and some lifestyle changes - principally more from a self awareness aspect than anything else.

Anyway good luck with the operation and Im sure you will find a significant amount of information via the search engine to satisfy your query. If I can help answer any specific questions from a Perth boys perspective for either you or your folks just sing out.

BTW Where are you having it done and by whom?

regards

Russell

Hi wendy,
I have known about my condition my whole life, i have had one other surgery which was a ballonoscpy which is a minimal risk op, quite easy.. relatively no pain and one day recovery.
Im getting prepared for a not so easy op (7 days to go)
Nice to hear about other people around my age having heart surgery.. its quite rare i gather :)

Jess,
Another welcome. My son is just a bit younger than you but not a computer chatter. He did not have the Ross but had his second valve replacement a couple months ago.

Is this something that just cropped up for you or have you known you had a heart issue before?

I have met a boy who had the Ross done at 13 but don't know him per se. He had 3 previous surgeries before this. He is doing fine. (He is a friend's nephew).

We are in the states.

Well we will be thinking about you and praying it all goes well next week. The waiting is one of the hardest parts. Stay in touch here cause we will worry if you don't get back to us. You can even have someone post for you if you like. Then we all sleep better. ;)

Jess,
I wanted to chime in and say that Dr. Skilington skill as a surgeon is recognized among some top U.S. cardiothoracic surgeons. He was specifically mentioned in correspondence I had with Dr. Paul Stelzer when I was considering the Ross Procedure.

I think you are in good hands! :)

Hi Jess,
What date is your surgery? I don't think we have you on our calendar yet. We really like to keep track of our members who are having surgery so we can pray and think good thoughts and wish them well right before they go in.

Sounds like you are in good hands!

Hey Jess,

Just wanted to say hello and to wish you luck. I haven't had the ross procedure but I did have my third open heart surgery just a few weeks ago. I just turned 24 last week (what a way to celebrate my bday) and from my understanding, open heart surgeries are getting to be more common amongst younger adults. Maybe its just seems like more because people are getting more comfortable talking about it. But anyways, good luck with your surgery. You will do just fine!! We will all be thinking about you :D

Hi Jess, I also saw Dr Andrews when my surgery was being discussed. I've actually written to him since I moved and he was very prompt with his reply, which I really appreciated. Haven't had to worry about the surgery since being in VIC (..yet!..), but who knows.... I could end up seeing Dr Skillington too (..in which case, we must swap notes :D ..).

Again, good luck for Wednesday.

Best wishes,
Anna : )
