It's not as much the expertise as it is the timing. If it's done just the night before, followed by the nasty brown soap, it doesn't have time to develop into an infection before surgery.

My chest was shaved the morning of surgery by an expert. :D Seriously...I was chatting with the guy who shaved me and he said he had been working at the hospital for 20 years and had been shaving folks in pre-op for the last ten years. He was as good at talking to me and keeping me calm as he was at shaving. They had told me the day before during the pre-op visit not to bother shaving...that they would take care of that. It was a nice perk to have a dedicated shaver working there. :D
