Does surgeon's age matter?

My surgeon, Dr. S(tephen) Scott Huerd, Jr. was 39 when he did my emergency mitral valve repair. His father, 74(?), also still does cardio-thoracic surgery, too--and wears a late 1960s style plaid leisure suit jacket--because he likes it. His father goes by Stephen S. Huerd.

It does feel funny having someone younger than me operating on me, since I was 45 at the time of surgery, but we could relate. We both have small children, his just a few years younger (a toddler and an infant, rather than a 7 year old and 4 year old like Laura and I have). He also had a surgical assistant from his own group, a Dr. Stott whom I never met, so I don't know how old he is. I'm here and recovering nicely, so even the young do excellent work.

My condition was so critical that he had to go into me via the traditional medial sternotomy; he could have done the minimally invasive version, but in order to get into me less than an hour after my arrival (40 minutes from off the helipad to first incision), the quickest was the best. His youth definitely showed, when, according to Laura, he said with his voice using the "Nah, nah, ni, nah-nah" sing-song tone he said "I know what his problem is!" His skill also showed--he was right and fixed it while I was only on heart-lung bypass for 62 minutes.
