My first OHS was emergent so I was the person who took a scheduled patient's spot in the OR. Even though I was going to the OR direct from CICU, my nurse told me that I could still be brought back up and my surgery cancelled if there was someone more urgent than me.
I had my surgery the day scheduled.
Fast forward four years and I learn I need a valve repair/replacement and through all the stress of waiting for my date to arrive, I kept remembering the nurse saying 'I could still be cancelled'.
I calmed myself by remembering I was once the emergency and was grateful to have had my surgery in time to help me.
If I had to give up my spot the second time around to someone who needed it more than I, hopefully I would 'pay it forward' and be understanding.
As it turned out, I went as scheduled.
Good luck. Hold on. The wait really is the worst part.
Your date to go over the mountain is almost here.
