i'm new to this forum, and i wasn't aware of the bio/mechanical bias really. i guess i can understand it in my own way. some people -- myself included, have strong feelings about their past surgeries and want to spare others the pain of going through multiple surgeries if they think someone is taking open heart surgery as a "light decision." i remember once on another forum i was in, someone came into the heart patient forum pretty much acting as if she really wanted open heart surgery despite having no actual problems (she had mild regurgitation) and calling it a "pain in the butt," "money saving" surgery. pretty much all the people who had gone through the surgery dogpiled her for treating it like that. so i think maybe the reaction comes from wanting to impress on someone that multiple surgeries isn't a cakewalk and unless they have a great reason for it, they should treat that decision with respect as it comes with pain, burdening families and a small chance of facing your mortality.

all the same, it's a personal decision and i was very relieved that my surgeon and cardiologist allowed me to make that decision without expressing any of their own opinion.

i guess that was the very longwinded approach to saying... i see that by nature, cardiac patients have a lot of emotional investment. but at the same time, it's a personal decision and we should strive to treat it impersonally and just give people the facts. but i know it's hard. but in the end, personal autonomy is a great thing!

Pikacat, you are wise beyond your years and shoult make a very good attorney.

Kinda like you, I postponed my surgery for almost a year 'til I finished my BS. When you get your "shingle", send me your business card....I know I would be in good hands with you as counsel.

lyn, there's someone at the surgeon's office who calls me every time. perhaps she's my contact? when things are less hectic, i'll give the office a call and find out about payment.

dick, i've often joked that i should have forced myself to take science and math classes instead of being an english major. what's up with my useless BA? i'd send you my business card, but i wouldn't be licensed in KY, though i've always wanted to visit. maybe you can show me where i can catch turtles, too if i ever get to head out there. that seems super fun.

You've got a better chance catching on of these turtles in Oregon than Kentucky. This is a young green sea turtle in a Caribbean sanctuary. We only have mean snapping turtles in KY and they are truly ugly creatures.. Keep your spirit.

I'll toss my 2c in here.
1) I had OHS at OHSU when I was 9 and that was a loooong time ago. They did a wonderful job!

2) My Cardiologist in Seattle had no idea what valve was what and sent me to a surgeon who offered only one choice before even looking at my labs. So I went to another surgeon in Tacoma who offered me a chance to be part of the Plavix trial with an ON-X valve. We talked about two other choices and looked at my CT scan together while discussing approach. I made the choice to go with the valve I have. I am getting free follow up for 8 years as part of the Plavix trial so in this day of insurance company hell that is good. Oh and he said getting in to me was tough because the scar tissue. FWIW

3) I was in Portland on Sunday and tried to feed the Lorakeets at the zoo but, they were not eating. I decided I want my dollar back for the cup of juice I bought them. Can you get that for me?

Good luck.

i definitely feel good about ohsu! thanks for the good word! i'm also looking so much forward to a life without chest pains and walking around again! it feels like it's been forever argh! but at least we're lucky ones with treatable conditions.

man, i'd go to the zoo but that's all far. would you believe i've lived here 12 years and have never been to the pdx zoo?

The evening before my surgery the surgeon came to see me and told me he wouldn't know until I was on the table as to whether it was one or two valves, they would do a TOE then decide. He just asked if I wanted tissue or mechanical, no brands mentioned. At 57 I opted for mechanical so as to hopefully avoid a re-operation at 70.

well.. I had been planning on just popping into Canadian Tire or Home Depot when the time came, but now, after reading this thread I am not so sure :wink2:

whispers...do ya think they might just go einey meiney miney mo ??? :biggrin2:

The evening before my surgery the sugeon asked me if I wanted mechanical or tissue, no brands were mentioned. I just said that as I was 57 I didn't really want a re-op at 70 so I guessed that I would need to go with mechanical. End of conversation.
