just because its an opportunity to discuss this, the aorta is big and complex

now in my case my aneurysm went all the way into the arch (yep, that dissection woulda been short and sharp)

Now the arch is complex with some variations in anatomy; the more common variants

some less common ones ...

so depending on the location on the aorta of the surgery, some of or all of those have to be reattached to the graft ...

HTH

PS: just as a final point that descending aorta is what a good Samurai is aiming for when they perform Seppuku. Its a fast death where the person often freezes. The rapid depressurisation of the brain sets it into shock.
Yes, I believe hemi-arch refers to the area from the valve to just below where any arteries branch off. in the ascending aorta, not the abdominal aorta. :p

Denton Cooley came through the room seemingly on roller skates prior to the surgery. Never saw him again.
When I was almost 15 and in Texas Children's in 1976 with acute Rheumatic Fever, I saw both Denton Cooley AND Michael DeBakey! Rheumatic Fever was pretty rare then so they both brought a group of students through to examine me. Dr. Cooley and his group came the first week I was there and I was quite embarrassed having to be examined by a bunch of "hot" doctors! Dr. DeBakey and his group came a couple of weeks later after I was long over my embarrassment, but I remember my nurse being a bit flustered with a "celebrity" in our midst as he didn't come over to TCH very often!

Croatia is famous for soccer world championships😂. And good food , wine and beautiful sunny Adriatic coast.
Yes, Dubrovnik was wonderful to visit:
1. view from the cable car
2. if I remember correctly, the worlds narrowest "street"

What an experience! I mean, they are celebrities in our world. ;) Dr. Reardon trained under DeBakey, which I have to say did effect my picking him as one of the surgeon's we were going to get opinions from. He just won us over. What a nice man he is. Surgeon's have a reputation of being stand offish with bad bedside manners, but not him. We are very happy with our choice. I have to say the post-op experience has our heads a bit flustered with the huge number of different types of cardiologists my hubby has to follow up with, and figuring out which doctor needs which information, but I think we have it basically figured out. His lifetime follow up will be Congenital Cardiology, with Electro Cardiology handling the afib, and follow up with the surgeon on November 15th.
