Moderation is the key. One or two drinks a day should not be harmful to many people but coumadin's effects can vary. I like a glass of wine with dinner and am 2 1/2 years post surgery and have a very stable INR.

I agree with Al that binge drinking could be very harmful.

If there is any history of CHF along with everything else, be careful of alcohol. There is a condition called cardiac cirrhosis which is scarring to the liver caused by fluid backup. It can happen with heart patients and is every bit as bad as other forms of cirrhosis.

I'm confused. Having consumed considerably more alcohol than usual over the past two weeks I expected my latest INR to be, if anything, higher than usual. Result? Lower. Does this make sense to any of you out there?

Hi,

Yes it does. The effect of Alcohol on INR can move it in either direction. In some cases it will increase it, and in others it will decrease it. If you look at some sites that have information on food interactions with Coumadin, they will tell you that it can go either way.

I talked to my doctor about alcohol consumption after my surgery and he said it was okay in moderation as long as I didn't binge.

Since my surgery two years ago, I've limited my alcohol intake to a couple of glasses of red wine with dinner maybe 3 - 4 times per week. My INR has been extremely consistent for the past year - but I have also been very consistent with the rest of my diet and my exercise over the same time period.
