Wise - My reference to the medicine chest was not for lower GI help. Given the penchant of restaurant chefs to bury their mistakes in salt, I was thinking more about extra diuretics. Oh, well. Count me in on the mileage quest. Only question - how do I count miles on an Airdyne exercise bike? I split my weekday routine between the Airdyne and a treadmill. (Or, today it was an elliptical and treadmill, which I would count as 1:1 miles because their effort is similar to walking.)

Sorry Steve. I know my comment was probably weird. I was pretty sure you weren't talking about prune juice. I was going back in Throwdown time with that one. I should have been clearer that it was a joke. Cooker used to joke about using prune juice as a secret weapon.

I don't about the exercise bike mileage. I know SB has used them in the past.

My suggestion for the mileage is 300 miles. In my calculations, if you averaged the mileage between our respective cities represented by potential participants that's the round number you will be close to.

Is that too much?

Not sure how to equate exercise-biking and walking. I can do 3-4 miles on an x-bike pretty easily (depending on tension settings of course) but walk a mile with difficulty.

Maybe there ought to be medals for covering the distance walking and biking and swimming. Heck we're all winners (losers), aren't we? :cool2:

Scales

Scales

I've had problems with scales in the past -- scales that were jumpy, hard to read, gave me wildly contradictory numbers from one step-on to the next a few minutes later....

When I got my Weight Watchers scales, I thought the problem had been solved. They seem very stable, easy to read, break down numbers into tenths, etc. Maybe the problem HAS been solved but over the past several days, maybe couple of weeks, something strange has happened. Every time I step on, I get the exact same number -- 261.2....wouldn't you expect at least a few ounces fluctuation, for fluid, for differences in what's eaten day to day, etc. . Wondering what's going on. Maybe I've just temporarily stabilized. Anyone else have an experience like this?

Hmmmm...think I will re-weigh right now, with heavy coat and shoes on, and then weigh au natural....maybe it's somehow stuck on past recordings and that will change it. Any other thoughts appreciated. I mean, I like that I haven't gained, but.....:confused2:

I have one of the newer digital scales, and sometimes I don't trust it, either. I find that when its battery is getting low, it becomes erratic. My "trick" to check it has been to step onto the scale and observe weight, then grab a 15 lb. weight and step back onto the scale. It should read 15 lbs. higher.

I don't weigh au natural - I find that the older I get, the fewer people want to see me without my clothes!

P.S. We will have to figure out something for the exercise bike mileage -- otherwise if I only count my elliptical or treadmill distance it could take me a year to cover 300 miles!

Battery! Good idea, I'll check that out -- thanks, Steve.

P.S. : this is an edit/update: Thought I would do this instead of a whole new post. Changing the battery seems to have fixed the problem. The scales now show change instead of seemingly being "stuck," and I think I will have a good report Friday. Thanks again, Steve. I guess the moral is, when a gizmo is acting up, by all means check the battery. : ) These WW scales really are the best I've ever had.

Hello friends! If 300 miles is too much, what about 100. It doesn't even have to be competitive. I admittedly suggested this challenge because of my need for an impetus to exercise more. My intention is not to complicate it or add stress. We could simply encourage each other as we individually work toward certain mileage goals. Thoughts?

I think 100 sounds good. (If we enjoy this, we could bump it up in the next trek). Personally, I don't feel a need to be competitive right now and if we're using different modes of locomotion (motion for "locos") :biggrin2:, we could just report and record in our particular modes (mine being Limp-Along, Senior Division)...:tongue2: But if anybody wants a race, you know Superbob is not going to shy away from it. :cool2:

Would we just report distance with our weekly weigh-in? Or more often?

I agree, this is a good way to start and a good way to report as well. NOW I have to walk.

I like this idea. I usually get close to 2 miles on the elliptical in 30 minutes (so it says) and I do another mile at work at lunch time, but barely get off the couch some weekends.
If the weather would cooperate, I'd get in 3/4 to 1 mile in the evening with Jet, too, but in the dark days of winter, hubby is taking that activity during daylight hours, when it is warmer.
I wonder if I can get this done in 6 weeks, if I bump up the activity a little?
Start date February 1?

Bob, I use and like my WW scale, too. But I have to be careful where I put it on the tile floor, so it's level.

February makes sense to me.

Also, I have WW scales and they definitely like to be level and have a juicy battery. My have begun to be erratic, but it's hard to get a happy spot on the floor too.

100 Miles? Count me in. I think the approach of "measure daily, report weekly" would work here, too. Let's see. . . if I average about 3.3 miles/day (combining exercise bike at 50% and treadmill/elliptical at 100%), 5 days a week, that should take about 6 weeks. Yeah - count me in to start in February. If I can't lose weight, at least I can have some fun.

Got a happy spot and a juicy battery (now)....does that guarantee me a joyous weigh-in? :biggrin2:

¡No hay garantías! There are no guarantees! In fact, I'm not having a good week weight wise in spite of all my walk talk. A happy spot and a juicy battery is a great start though!

So if you talk the talk, you've got to walk the walk. Or even if you talk the walk, you've still got to walk the walk, rather than just talking the walking. :biggrin2: Time to step it up, Kentucky Flash. The walkers are at the starting gate. .... And they're off -- just think of it as the Derby....:smile2:

Getting my silks ready for the big race, which in this case will be much longer than two minutes. Of course my colors are blue and white! I'll be watching for superhero wearing a rocky top orange cape.
