Hopefully that herd of goats was milkers.... 75-100 is hobby sized.
Lambs are usually sold in early summer or late spring for meat (Easter, etc.)
My Greek neighbours have over 1,500 milkers for making feta, yogurt, etc. SO GOOD. :)
They have the white Saanen breed.
Other breeds are better for meat, but we won't go there. ;)

I guess a BBQ is out of the question then???? :(

Myoclonus is a condition that exists in humans, too. It's really more like a seizure, only you don't lose consciousness. Some people actually kick and jerk a little along with it. As you can see, it tends to be hereditary. We have A LOT of goats in our neck of the woods. A woman makes fairly good money taking her herd (or flock or whatever) to different places where they graze on the weeds and decrease the fire danger in addition to producing a very sought-after cheese (very strong, with all that sage-y stuff). Goat meat IS very popular in our large Hispanic (and now Middle Eastern) population. I had a good friend who was actually the Queen for the Lamb Producers one year. We were all horrified that she was actually encouraging us to eat those cute little creatures, but her explanation was a good one. Eating the meat supports a whole vast array of folks, and also research. The US does not have much interest in mutton, but much of it goes into dog food and abroad. You can make clothing, curtains, and rugs out of the wool and various items out of the skin. Lanolin is a great skin care item. Etc. Plus sheep have been eaten since Biblical times, as have goats. The goat barn at our county fair is huge, and includes meat and dairy goats.
We have 2 goats, but they are pets and boarders. We have seen one of the goats actually climbing a tree. Ours are not much good as lawnmowers, though. The lady in the goat barn was vastly amused by our ignorance, stating "Goats always look up, and sheep look down". If that ain't the truth.
Our goats have managed to turn a rosebush into a huge topiary and strip the bark off of a spruce tree, in addition to other things. What a goat can do to a garden (flower and vegetable) in a few minutes is unmentionable. We learned the hard way. They have eaten our persimmon to the roots on a number of occasions. Plus, goats are smart and can get out of the yard better than Houdini. Ours stay in the yard because we have a huge dog that protects them; they really don't want to be coyote food.
Well, got to go now and scare up a lunch for KC tomorrow.

that's very interesting, Laura. I have never heard of that condition before. thank you for enlightening us. And, yes, Bina I did sleep better.

ate barbecued goat once made by a cuban. In Cuba, goats are on the menu and they truly know how to cook it. if we hadn't known it was goat, we'd never have guessed. delicious

Danny, hope you are keepin up. you are very quiet.

Bina, do you have any herds of goats in your area that are used for fire prevention? Probably not in Canada, but down here in fire country there are herds of wandering goats and their shepherds that are hired to go from area to area to eat down the brush to lessen the fire danger. Don't know how the program works exactly but do know it is used in some areas quite extensively and have had to wait more than once until the goat herd was across the highway (minor roadways, not any of the heavily used ones). It's amazing to watch the dogs work the herds also.
