Every two weeks is too often for most people. I check every 4 to 6 weeks for my patients who are in range.

I've been on Coumadin for 8+ years now and have found it to be a non-issue, other than the hassle of getting your blood monitored, which isn't really that big of a deal for me since I only go every 2-3 months. (This timing doesn't work for everyone, but I have been stable for a long time.) Also, I wish that I had the problem of being cold since I live in Texas and it reached 100 degrees today!

Thanks for everybody's responses.

This is really tough. I'm kind of past the side effects now, thinking I can deal with any inconvenience for the sake of being around for my kids, and am now primarily worried about the increased threat of embolism or hemorrhage that seems to be indicated in all the journals.

You will learn to keep it as a concern, not a worry. More in the back of your mind.

We just had a patient fall outside our office. He tripped over the curb and knocked about a 2 inch gash in his forehaed. He was on warfarin. He bled some but not excessively. Two hours later he was back from the ER and keeping his appointment. That is what I mean by a concern, not a worry.

My question is about the side effects people have experienced on blood thinners. I mostly hear that you get used to it, but some people recount anxiety, depression, getting cold very easily, and sleeplessness as side effects. That doesn't sound like fun.
Hi Jeff,
I'm new to the forum also. I've got a St Jude mechanical Mitral Valve and been on Coumadinfor 9+ years. I don't have any side effects from Coumadin other than the occasional bruising. I don't have any trouble sleeping and I don't get cold. Actually I can take the cold better than the heat, but that's because of my CHF. Warfarin has made very little difference in my life except for helping to keep me alive.

After I made the post above about the guy who fell, I had the opportunity to speak to his wife. His INR was 3.0 and he had 7 stitches across his forehead. I think the bottom line is that he had a nasty fall with a therapeutic INR but he did not bleed excessively.
