I have heard many of you talk about having arrythmias after surgery. Why is this. I have VT and AF and my doctors told me that these would probably go away after surgery. Now i'm a little concerned as to why people are getting arrythmias after surgery.

The first several weeks after surgery there is about a 30% to 40% chance of getting AF, but it usually goes away by itself, and if not, they will do a cardioversion. This is because the heart is all inflamed, not to mention the fact that it is remodeling.

The AF (and probably the VT) you have now are most certainly caused by your valve disease, so even if you have it a while after surgery, chances are it will go away eventually.

However, for the AF, you might ask whether you need a Maze Procedure. I had one, and I had only had AF for a small amount of time before the surgery.

Hey Laura - I seem to be the exception to the rule here. I was having thousands of arrhythmias pre-surgery, but afterward they seem to have almost completely disappeared. Of course, in the first few weeks after surgery your heart will be mending and recovering from what has happened, so it is normal for it to be a little out of whack, but for me that was more of an elevated HR than arrhythmias.

I wonder if it's different with the PV, since increased arrhythmias can be one of the indicators that it's time for a PVR, so it would make sense that replacing it would reduce these.

They are doing a maze procedure. and everything else makes sence now. TX

I think that there are many different reasons for all of the rhythm issues. My EP MD thinks that the majority of mine are being generated around the patch they used on my ASD and are also because my right atrium was so enlarged. I had a maze procedure as a precaution to keep me from developing A-fib...so far that seems to have worked. Good luck with yours and hopefully you won't have to travel down this road afterwards.
