Pre-op I had trouble in the heat, which was expected by my doctors. It's getting unseasonably warm here in Arizona -- but not hot by Arizona standards -- and I'm already getting fatigued riding in the late mornings.
Anyone have trouble with heat post-op?

Heat was something I worried about before surgery as I knew it was taking place in high summer. As I feared, it got really hot a couple of days after discharge, when I was staying at my parents' place (up to 43C/109F in that part of Sydney during a heatwave that lasted about 4-5 days; it was the same time as the bushfires in Victoria). I recall walking by myself to a chemist about 300 metres from home in the afternoon of one of these hot days, about a week after surgery, which in hindsight was a silly thing to do, although nothing amiss happened. I ended up spending the week after discharge sitting/sleeping in an air-conditioned room, leaving walking exercise till after dusk (when it was still pretty hot). Strangely enough, a week or so later I was back at my place in the country shivering over a radiator!
Since coming home heat hasn't been a problem, but I think I learnt that heart surgery virtually necessitates a degree of flexibility when doing outdoor exercise.

By the time the next summer came around in Australia 2005/06, I was back to normal and the 38C (100F) were just another summers day.

The year of my surgery, I found hot summer weather very uncomfortable and tiring. It was hard to breath so got SOB when I was doing anything physical outside, even just doing routine chores in the garden, not necessarily heavy ones. That would have been months 5 & 6 post-op. The following summer, I was back to normal.
I live in the one of the most heat / humidity oppressive areas in the USA ....The Deep South" ..... I have noticed no problem with the 95F and sometimes 100% humidity ... in fact I seem to tolerate it better ... now cold is a different story

I'm always in heat!
I have a hard time breathing in the hot humid air up here during summer. Not only that, but I start sweating immediately when the sun hits me, so hydration/dehydration is an issue.
It sucks because I wait all winter to be able to get out in the fresh air, but get forced back into the airconditioned rooms (2, livingroom, kitchen) of the house.

We travel and cruise to the Caribbean often and I worried about coping with the heat. I find I have to transition slowly from the cold of the Northeast in winter. We are walkers and I have to cut down my distance and speed for at least the first few days we hit the hot Caribbean islands and for the most part I am fine. I listen to my body and there have been times I've said to DH, that's it. Let's get a taxi and head back to the ship. I just know the heat is too much for me at that moment and I think it silly to push myself too far. That doesn't happen often thankfully.
My cardio knows I'm a walker in both frigid cold and high heat and he is fine with it. Our best friend is a well respected Internist in our area and he doesn't like me walking in the under 20 degrees temps and over 90 high humidity heat. Difference of opinion.

I've never had any problem from heat. Lived in dry hot west Texas during and after AVR. Been here in HOT HUMID AR for 10 years and we live lake front on an small island... no problem. I usually never fail to fast walk 3 miles every day. But in the summer I start about sunup.
We have cruised the eastern and western Caribbean several times... didn't think it was as bad as summers here. Maybe it was the time of the year we were there? Going to find out about the Southern Caribbean in a few weeks.

How great, Dayton. We lived in Texas for about a year and loved it but sure had some high heat.
We cruised Southern Caribbean for 14 days in December. Was fabulous. We love the Southern, Dutch Islands of Aurba and Curacao. Bonaire is pretty, too. That route usually takes us to Barbados. Beautiful beaches. Have Fun!
The temperature in the Caribbean doesn't change that much all year but the level of humidity does. Summer can be extremely heavy air and some folks have trouble with SOB. Definitely most should take it a bit slower.

I never tolerated heat ever before.
After surgery I feel colder than before. So, I am hoping to tolerate heat better...will see

Got the east, west and south mixed up. Should have said we've been to the Eastern and Southern Caribbean. In December we were on a 10 day cruise starting at Ft Lauderdale, stopped at Half Moon Cay, Bahamas, Aruba, Curacao, Panama Canal and Costa Rica. We were aboard the Holland America's Zuiderdam. We were on that same ship last March, in fact we had the same suite.
We'll be going to the western Caribbean soon but this time we board at Galveston, TX on Royal Caribbean.
Guess I didn't notice the heat due to our AR summers. It's gets pretty bad here in July and August.

I don't tolerate the heat that well anymore and AZ heat/humidity is terrible during July and August. Anyone in their right mind shouldn't exercise outdoors in the middle of the day, but I still see crazy people running or riding their bikes in 35-40 or degree or higher heat.
I can't do that and stay indoors. I have a BowFlex , treadmill and recumbent bike. I admit it is boring not to exercise with others but these are the choices I have. I choose not to go to a gym. It takes too much time out of my schedule.
I didn't like the humidity on the islands at all when we took a western caribbean cruise. We went in October. We went off the ship but I couldn't wait to get back on at times. I just don't do well in high humidity. I also didn't walk the track on the ship because it was too hot to be outside. The gym indoors was fantastic. The cruise was wonderful and the ships are so beautiful.

Island heat bothered me that day. We walked the beach and I needed to sit for a bit after. But it was so glorious to be able to walk that gorgeous beach.

Many people have said it has taken them up to a year to fully recover from OHS, so it may be that you're still going through a period of adjustment. Then again, if you struggled with the heat prior to your surgery, maybe you're just sensitive to it altogether.
I find the dry heat much easier than humid heat (humidity has always knocked me on my *ss), but overall it's still draining. It might be a good idea to ride earlier in the day, or in the evening when it cools down - see if it makes a difference.

My surgery was during the very hot and humid summer of '06. I was very grateful to have the air conditioner at my parents' house. Getting my exercise in was difficult though since I could only go out in the very early morning or after sunset--the heat was too unbearable for me.
Your December cruise didn't happen to be on Prinsendam? If so, we shared our day at Half Moon Cay with you. We were on Maasdam.

You will see in my previous post the name of our ship.
We got to Half Moon Cay on December 10th at about 7AM. It was our first stop after Ft Lauderdale. But that picture was taken in March when we were there. We were in the first boat going ashore and almost the first on the beach. It did warm up later in the day but the water was cold. It is a most beautiful beach! Loved walking it. The BBQ wasn't too bad either. We were the only ship there that day, we set sail at 4 PM.
We have another 14 day cruise in late summer. Starting in Quebec City, ports in Canada, Newfoundland, ( I was stationed in Newf. for 2 years in the 50's). Then at ports on our east coast to Ft Lauderdale aboard Holland America's Eurodam. We have the same suite number as on we had twice on the Zuiderdam.

We are booked to sail Eurodam back-to-back in the spring. We toured her when the ship was in Boston this summer as a port call. She's really beautiful. Wonderful Neptune Lounge.
We sail Maasdam doing the Canada/New England Itinerary which is Boston to Montreal and the return. Boston, Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney (Nova Scotia), Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island), Quebec City to Montreal. We stay aboard and sail the return to Boston. No Airports/No Airplanes as we live near Boston.
It isn't often we have to cope with too much heat on that itinerary though we do have lovely weather most of the time.

Eurodam we sail in the Caribbean but Maasdam we sail for the Canada/New England cruise in June. We have two days in Quebec City but only one in Montreal. That is what they call 'turn around day'. We sail from Boston, stop in all the ports along the way and the cruise ends in Montreal. Most guests disembark but we always stay aboard and sail the itinerary in reverse back to Boston. No Airports!!!
