 Hi Everyone:
Long story short...I have severe mitral regurgitation (4+), both sides of mitral valve prolapsed, and it looks like I will require surgery in the future. I can't seem to find a doctor locally (Connecticut) that seems to have confidence in mending this valve (I am 49), and I would greatly prefer repair over replacement.

I was referred to Dr. Cohn in Boston, and he feels confident (95%) that he can fix the valve. Has anyone had a successful fix by Dr. Cohn. It's obviously a very anxious time.

Thanks,
Melanie

Hi Melanie. We are neighbors- we live in New London and Dick had Dr. Cohn for his AVR. We can't say enough good things about Dr. Cohn and Brigham. Please feel free to private message me with any questions you may have.

No experience with him.. I went to Gammie at The Univ. of MD.
but I wanted to welcome you!

Brigham and Women's is in the top ten heart centers every year, as is Mass General. Dr. Kohn is well known as a top doc.

You should keep in mind that a repair failure means a reoperation, sometimes after a very brief time (a few years, or even a few days). It is preferrable to replacement, but not without its own risks. I think you're smart to try, though, and mitral valve repairs have a good record with the right surgeons.

Best wishes,
