Let's put the number of years my Dad has managed into SOME perspective:
Mom and Dad have owned 8 cars: 1976 Monte Carlo; 1981 Monte Carlo SC ... became mine, Dec 99; 1982 Chevette; 1990 Corsica; 1988 nova; 1997 mc LS; 2002 Cavalier; 2006 Cobalt.
My sister and I have graduated HS and college.
If you lived in Elgin in 1980, you would NOT recognize it if you returned for a visit in 2007.
The Cubs have won 2 NL East titles (1984 and 1989), 1 NL wild-card (1998), and 1 NL Central title (2003).
I have had 2 open heart surgeries: 1987 and 2003.
When the city-league team started in 1980, the Monte Carlo was celebrating its 10th anniversary and featured a Turbo engine for the first of 2 times (1981 being the 2nd).
We've had 4 US Presidents: Ronald Reagan (1980-1988), George Bush Sr (1988-1992), Bill Clinton (1992-2000) and George Bush Jr (2000-present).
The year Dad's team went undefeated (1987), I had my second open heart surgery, Andre Dawson won NL Most Valuable Player for the last-place Chicago Cubs, the MN Twins defeated the St Louis Cardinals 4 games to 3 in the World Series (the home team won EVERY game), the LAST Monte Carlo rolled off the assembly line, and my then best friend died of an asthma attack. The top 10 popular TV series: The Cosby Show (NBC), Roseanne (ABC), A Different World (NBC), Cheers (NBC), 60 Minutes (CBS), The Golden Girls (NBC), Who's the Boss? (ABC), Murder, She Wrote (CBS), Empty Nest (NBC), and Anything But Love (ABC).
The team/game statistics the article notes are just the tip of the iceberg. Dad can show you stats (batting percentages, on base percentages, etc.) for every one of those players, statistics of wins-loses for each FIELD on which they played a game, and a whole heck of a lot more.
Unfortunately, the article didn't include some highlights, including these:
In one game many years ago, Dad's team was down 20-10 in the top of the 7th inning. But, with 2 outs in the top of the 7th, Dad's team promptly scored 11 runs to take a 21-20 lead ... and held the opposition scoreless (after they had scored in EVERY inning thus far) in the bottom of the 7th to win. With the score 20-17 and the bases loaded with 2 outs, I turned to my "broadcast partner" at the time and said, "We wouldn't have gotten this close, if we weren't going to win, right?" Two hits and 4 runs later, we had the lead. [Since the mid-1980s, I've done "play by play" from the stands ... and I still do it today. It started because I wanted to replace Harry Caray in the Cubs' broadcast booth ... ah, the dreams we had as kids.]
Another one was just a couple weeks ago. In one inning, the third baseman (Scott L ... mentioned in the article) sparked a double play when he scrambled to step on third for one out ... and then threw a bullet to the first baseman for the 2nd out, "just in time". Then, the very next batter smashed a line shot towards right field, but Eric J (bro-in-law, who leads his own co-ed team on Tuesday nights in the Elgin City Leagues) dived and snagged the ball for the third out.
For those of you in the area, Dad is always looking for more players . Or, if you are interested in coming out to watch ... let me know ... I'll post a schedule and directions.
