Hi everyone! I am 17 days post PVR and coming along splendidly!

In Australia the usual hospital stay for OHS is 7 days, but I was cleared to go home in 6... I sailed through my hospital stay: didn't need pacing wires, came out of ICU in 36 hours, got off strong meds in 6 days, and just generally found the experience to be fine - the only thing that bothered me was the breathing tube when I first woke up...

I'm on paracetamol only for minor pain (mainly the tension headaches caused by my tense shoulders and neck), I'm doing some cooking, walking, shopping, socialising. I'm 29 years old, but still, in my head I thought these things would take a little longer... So I'm very happy with my progress, but there is one thing that's not returned to normal yet - my sleeping patterns.

I'm having trouble getting to sleep, and when I do I wake up because I need to visit the loo or my brain wakes me up at the precise time to take my Panadol again... I haven't slept for longer than 6 hours, and it's driving me insane. I am sleeping flat, and this is fine for me - I use my core muscles to sit up and lie down, but I've tried sleeping with more pillows, cutting my water-drinking in the hours before bed, even tried a slower-release Panadol and none of it is working. Any ideas??

Thanks everyone!

I had my last PVR 3 years ago. Sleeping 6 hours straight at this point it good. You may still have a little extra fluid on board from surgery. Getting up in the middle of the night may improve as your pain and fluid status stabilizes. I am 48 years old and also have lung problems. I have had to get use to getting up at least once in the middle of the night. I am so excited when I don't have to get up in the middle of the night.

Your are doing great. Keep up the good work. For shoulder and neck pain try a heat pack. It did wonders for me.

Debbie
