That's great to hear. I'm a relative newbie at 2.5 years with the Edwards Magna-Ease. What type of tissue valve did you receive?

A Carpenteir-Edwards Perimount Magma 3000. I hope your newer model lasts even more years than what mine has.

June 7 marked 19 years since my bovine valve was implanted. I have had no problems and all the cautionary tales (you will have symptoms related to valve degradation as the valve ages) have not materialized. When it does need to be replaced, it will be a TAVR.

Mary, I had both knees replaced last year. It's worked out perfectly for me and I can enjoy walking once again. The surgery is tough and the first few weeks are a challenge but with productive rehab you should do fine. Good luck!

I’m glad to learn of your experience, Jim. I’ve postponed surgery for too long, but I guess it’s time to “get ‘er done”!

It's normal to second guess. I have a mechanical valve and second guess when I need surgery or need to take a disallowed anti-inflammatory drug. I'd still make the same decision, it's just no path is perfect.

Rest easy that your surgery will be less annoying and risky w/o warfarin in your veins

Woohoo! That is just fantastic news, Duffey and I am so very happy for you. May you continue with great health and may your valve last you many more years. As you said, next time will be TAVR. Just awesome....
I am slated for re-do OHS early fall. I can't complain as my Edwards Perimount AV lasted shy of 15 years (so a pretty good run) . I now need my pulmonary valve replaced and they found a small PDA to be ligated. I guess I am happy with my choice as I wouldn't have been a happy camper knowing that I would need another OHS because of the other valve issue and other new finding.
With the pulmonary valve, I don't have a choice but will be given a homograft (no mechanical option here). Makes one wonder whether I should go tissue again with aortic or mix up a mechanical valve and with a tissue pulmonary valve....
If I only had a Crystal ball..... I was told that I may even get greater longevity with the next aortic tissue as I am now 15 years older! LOL....

P.S. all best wishes with your upcoming knee replacement. I know a few who are glad that got er done!

Good to hear. I'm coming up on 12 years myself with the same as what you just said. In fact my cardiologist said these valves are lasting a lot longer than they thought.

Just completed 17 years on my Porcine valve and doing fine! Couldn't quite believe it when I passed the 12-year mark, BUT, here I am. Good luck to all!!

My next door neighbor just had BOTH knees replaced at same time a few weeks ago.

As far as I am aware normally folks only get one done at a time then after that heals they tackle the other one.

For those on warfarin - I wonder if it makes more sense to tackle both at the same time? May be less risk or hassle than having to undergo two separate operations and all that might be involved with stopping warfarin and bridging etc twice instead of just once??? Am curious if anyone knows something about this.

My spouse and a friend had both knees done at the same time. They are not on warfarin. Both did for the "one and done" reason. My friend said he knows many who need both done, but get one and then not the second, since one good knee was enough. He tells people to get them both done at the same time. The rehab is pretty much the same.

I prefer to go tissue but you may be an outlier I know for myself I've got high levels of lipoprotein it's genetically programmed also got low levels of HDL also genetics I do keep my LDL though I'm 61 I think I'm going to probably have the surgery at 62 which still puts me firmly in the mechanical valve category. Any idea why you think it's lasted so long? I'm also assuming you keep your blood pressure down your weight down you exercise a lot you eat well? Take a lot of medications get regular checkups?
