    67Walkon's surgery Friday, July 6th

Shhhh-I'm not supposed to be at work today! Thanks for all the kind words. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me", so I will be fine. I am sort of looking forward to it, or at least getting it over! And for Mary, and others who either have dates in the near future or are...

    Date set

Mary, having a definite date is at first terrifying and then later very comforting. I hope it doesn't become terrifying again! You will know what to expect from reading the posts here, so you will be worlds ahead of the average OHS patient. You have plenty of time to take care of all the...

A Couple of Tips on Preparing for Surgery

Adam, I think a bigger problem is the aorta. Once it starts growing, you can be a whole lot of trouble if it isn't repaired. With the valve, from what the docs said and what I have read here, you just get kind of weaker and wearker, or less exercise tolerant, until it gets really bad. With...

    In the countdown stage!

Thanks, all. Probably I(or my wife) can't post until we get home as we'll be out of town for the surgery. But as soon as I get home, I'll let you know.

    In the countdown stage!

Surgery is Friday, first thing. I think I'm ready and I think my wife and kids are ready. Surgery is about 4 hours away by car. We are heading out Wednesday afternoon, doing the pre-op stuff Thursday and surgery Friday. This website has me as well prepared as possible. So far, I'm not...

A Couple of Tips on Preparing for Surgery

Like a condemned man's last meal? My "last meal", pre-surgery, will be this Thursday night. I was thinking about Outback or somewhere like that, but you make a good point. Maybe something a little lighter. There will be plenty of time later to eat! I hope. John

A Couple of Tips on Preparing for Surgery

Great advice! I hope. My surgery is one week from today. Positive encouragement like your post is really, really helpful. I'm good in the being in shape part, except I have gained about 5 pounds since they told me I couldn't exercise as hard or as much as I was. I've been able to continue...

I'm here - all is well!

Wow! Surgery on Friday and home on Monday! You must be a superwoman. That is is the quickest turn around I've heard of. My surgery is Friday, July 6, and if they let me go on Monday, I will be ecstatic! Take it slow and enjoy your kids!

    Back Pain/Discomfort after OHS

Just when I am pretty calm, I find out there is something else to worry about! Massage sounds like the ticket. Also, heat is very helpful for loosening up things likes that. Hang in there, it will get better.

    AVR this week

Kevin, good luck. I'm 20 years older than you and have been doing endurance type sports-running, basketball and lately biking-my whole life. They tell me I won't have any restrictions on my post surgery activities except no "heavy, heavy weight lifting", whatever that means. I think a lot of...

    Changed Docs all is good

Sometimes finding a doctor you like and trust is the biggest part of the battle! Sometimes I get the feeling they don't think this kind of surgery is any big deal, but it sure is to the patient! Good luck on the 5th. I'm one day behind you.

After a 2 year hiatus, AVR is back on

Gag, I don't know if this is the answer for you, but I have some information I got just this week from the surgeon. Over the past few years, the echo has shown my aortic valve deteriorating from about 1.5 to 1, as of March this year. They told me to start thinking about a surgeon. The...

    Heart Cath came out great.

Isn't it nice to get some good heart news? Thanks for all the encouragement.

    Heart Cath came out great.

They did my heart cath today for my July 6 surgery. The local doctor gave us copies of some of the pictures and wrote on them that my coronary arteries were "beautiful"--first really good heart news I've had in a while! There was one odd thing. Almost 2 years ago, my arotic valve had "mild"...

Why does our recovery take longer than other major surgeries?

A younger-32 years old-guy at my office suffered a really bad broken leg last Wednesday night. They operated in the middle of the night, putting in a titanium rod, etc. Today is Sunday, and he is still on morphine. They are telling him they might let him go home Tuesday, which is about the...
