    Run times and distance

Running on a TM regularly is not good. I use it only out of desperation. I does keep the lungs and heart healthy but it isn't real running. Think about what it is doing. There's a motor moving a belt below your feet and you simply bounce up and down in rhythm with the belt timing. You are...

A Global Hero is a runner - Apply for the 2013 Global Heroes team today

Fast/Slow doesn't enter into the equation as far as I can see. The only reason they might reject you outright is if you haven't run at least a couple 10 mile or greater races since your procedure.

No. Simply tell them I'm still active after 22 years. That's what's hidden in the back of their minds. "How long do I have?" And the answer is, it's up to you.

    Pushups routine

Right. You should all remember I'm 22 years post-op. At 4 mos. I probably didn't try one either, 8 Mos. though, very likely. Oh, and BTW, I got a 1st place M60-69 at a 5K today on 3 mi/wk training. Not a fast time even for me, but a hard effort nonetheless.

    Pushups routine

That's sort of what got me started, although I was never in the military. At 14-15, I was in the civil air patrol and my older brother who outranked me took great delight in making me drop down to do 20 for any misstep. I would have to do upwards of 100 during drills. I always incorporated them...

    Pushups routine

I never do anything every day. I'm a big believer in rest days whatever I'm doing. I learned hard day/easy day with running a long time ago, so I follow that formula. I'll do 300+ on M,W,F and and an easy 100 on T,Th. Usually none on the weekends.

My running mileage is way down because the winter has continued unabated, less than 150 miles YTD, so I got into a bit of a competition with some younger guys on LogARun.com. I'm 65, they're anywhere from 25 to 55. It took me about 8 weeks to climb to #1. I'm up to about 1,100 a week now, over...

    Cardio Coach, anyone?

A typical coach, athletic trainer or physical therapist would not know how to cope with post-cardiac training. I was a USA T&F coach 20 yrs ago and while I coached many beginners, I never took on someone with a serious medical history other than obesity. My son is a Dr. of Physical Therapy at a...

    Cardio Coach, anyone?

Yeah, we've all had a similar situation. Hundreds of such people, you may not believe it at first, are hanging out at: http://www.cardiacathletes.com/ My valve is almost 22 years old now, have run tens of thousands of miles and maybe 250-300 races since. Ran a half-marathon Jan 1st, swam a mile...

Competitive swimming with a mechanical aortic valve ...

I swim like a jellyfish, just sort of float lazily along for 1000 meters or so. But I like to run track distances of 800m & 1 mile and those can push your HR through the roof. You start sucking wind at the half way mark and then see how much pain you can tolerate for the remainder. I've done...

    TV interview

When you think about it, logging 1000 miles is not a big deal and it's an average. It's less than 3/day, 19/week. Of course there are years when I do only 600 and years when I do 1200. My highest was about 1500. What I'm more proud of was the 35 years of consistency and if you look at the annual...

What type of jobs you guys got?

I dare say the fight was probably not with yourself, right? I had some issues with my management following the OHS and my job was sedentary.

    Livestrong 1/2

Did I ever show you my bling? This is my "trophy case", a box in the basement sitting next to some paint buckets. I harp about finishes all the time, even a 3 hour half. I keep a list of 425 races with times, locations, etc., but the bling is soon forgotten.

    TV interview

A TV reporter in Albany, NY contacted the Cardiac Athletes group on Facebook a few months ago looking to do a story on folks who had cardiac procedures and returned to fitness activities. She's the local health reporter and does things on every medical issue under the sun. I got in touch with...
