Hard to believe. I heart that the barb went right into his heart, don't know if that's true. But the poison on the barb stopped his heart.

I suppose that if he were to choose the way he would go, I'm sure he'd think that was pretty cool. But I'm sorry it happened so young.

Irwin, 44, tangled with some of the world's most dangerous animals but he died in an extremely rare attack by a normally placid sea creature while he was diving on a reef off Port Douglas in northern Queensland.

"He came over the top of a stingray and the stingray's barb went up and went into his chest and put a hole into his heart," Irwin's shocked manager John Stainton told reporters in Cairns, south of Port Douglas.

A helicopter rushed paramedics to nearby Low Isles where Irwin was taken for treatment, but he was dead before they arrived, emergency officials said.

"It became clear fairly soon that he had non-survivable injuries," Dr. Ed O'Loughlin, who treated Irwin, told Nine Network television.

"He had a penetrating injury to the left front of his chest. He had lost his pulse and wasn't breathing," he said.

Irwin's death was likely only the third recorded fatal stingray attack in Australia, experts said. They said stingray venom was agonizingly painful but not lethal, although the barb was capable of causing horrific injuries like a knife or bayonet.

"It's not the going in, it's the coming out," Australian Venom Research Unit deputy director Dr Bryan Fry told Reuters.

"They have these deep serrations which tear and render the flesh as it comes out," he said.

This is so sad my family has enjoyed his show for years now. It is a great loss:(

This is indeed sad, but certainly not the first time a person has been killed by a animal. Even the most experinced, have met a quick death by the animals that seemed to be under control. One hates to think what would have happen if his shoe lace had come untied, and he fell while holding on to his baby when that CROC was a step away.

Fatal attack by rays are rare, but not unheard of. My wife lost a friend that way- a quick and powerful slash through the heart.

My prayers to his wife and children.:(

I was so shocked to learn of Steve's death this morning. We all loved him (even have the Steve Irwin talking doll!)!

We have been to Stingray City in Cayman twice. You jump off the boat and get in the water with at least 25 (probably a lot more) stingrays and pet and feed these guys. You can get a "hickey" if you don't hold your hand correctly when they suck the squid that you are feeding them. The tour leaders are always lifting them up out of the water to show their barbs. I'm sure this is going to make a big dent in their trips for awhile.

I do wonder if ole' Steve just "swam over" the stingray, since they were filming the "Ocean's Deadliest" at the time, or if he was trying to get it's attention for a good shot?

He was quite a character.

I don't know exactly, but the story I'm getting from friends in Australia is that he swam over a reef and startled the ray provoking the attack.

I feel so ignorant. People were saying that they were surprised he was killed by a stingray because you can swim with them. I don't know much about them...but just the name made me picture them as dangerous, sort of like a man-of-war. I was so shocked and upset by this. My daughter is the queen of Animal Planet. She's addicted to Meerkat Manor. I dread her finding out. It's such a hard lesson that someone young and vital can be gone in a second, even though he did take risks.

I found the news very unsettling. He had a beautiful little girl and boy at home, and his wife seemed like a lovely person.
A tragic loss of life, even though I realize all losses are tragic.

Wow...This is Horrible.....Steve Irwin was the coolest....

What a horrible thing to happen....I loved watching his shows, and he always made everything fun and interesting at the same time...WHAT A BUMMER!!!!:( :( :( :( :( :(

The news here this morning is that a very brave Steve actually pulled that jagged barb out of his chest minutes before he died...as they were filming a doco when this happened it was all captured on film.

We are all in shock here Steve was a great Aussie with a real passion for saving our wildlife.

RIP Steve.
