Wisconsin

We are heading up there June 30. We live in Peru, Il and go to the Rice Lake area every year. We actually stay on Red Cedar Lake which is a few miles from Birchwood. I have been going there since I was 2 and that makes it over 50 years. My kids and their families all come along. My husband goes in May with the guys, family in July and us around Labor Day. Love the area. We always stay at Black River Falls on the way up because the kids love swimming and staying in a hotel. I know we go through the Madison area since you can see the capital building from the road. This is approximately a 400 mile trip from where we live.

I have an ex sister-in-law who is an RN in Madison - Meriter Hospital I think it is called. She's been at it for 30 years!

I was born in Madison - lived there almost 20 years - got married and moved west because of hubby's choice of law school.

Randy & Robyn: My grandma and grandpa had a house on Buffalo Lake - Packwaukee Wisconsin or maybe it was Montello. Anywho, thats close to Portage, isn't it? I can remember driving to their place for Sunday dinner and playing in the lake.

Lots of beautiful country in Northern Wisconsin, that's for sure.

Hi, Cort. We usually cut through central Illinois on our way up there. However, if we carpool with my brother from Indy, we may go a different route. I'll let you know when I find out. :)

*nods*

Fair enough :).

I don't blame ya for going up central IL up I-39 ... much less stressful than dodgin' Chicago traffic ;). Just keep in mind, tho, that even going up I-39 you're about an hour away from me....

I was once a Wisconsinite or whatever people from Wisconsin are called. We lived in Racine for a couple of years. My hubby works for Johnson Wax. Our favorite place in Racine is O & H Bakery. They make the best Kringle in the world. If you've never had Kringle, you can log onto O & H Bakery's web site and order some. We order it several times a year. Oh, and we loved Racine. LINDA

I also live in Wisconsin. I live in a suburb of Milwaukee and have lived here my whole life ( 34 years )! It is a great place to live and there is always a lot to do!

I've written Birky about her trip before, because we own a summer place about 35 miles from Rice Lake.
My grandparents bought it in 1934, and it's been passed down through our family. We have missed our annual trip for the past several years, but we hope to make it up maybe in the late summer.
We travel I-39 to Rockford, then hit Madison and keep heading North.
And by the way, we pay enough in property taxes on the house that we should be made honorary residents of Wisconsin!!!!

If I remember correctly, you are on the Chippewa Flowage. Are you by any chance there over the 4th? I just hope it is not really hot when we get there because there is no air conditioning but do have the lake to cool off. All 6 grandkids are going so it ought to be interesting.

Marcia,
We're not on the flowage; we're about 9 miles south of Bruce on the Chippewa. Bloomer is about 20 miles south of us; Rice Lake 35 miles to the NW.
Unfortunately we're not going up on the 4th, and I miss being there all ready! :( :(
We are about 735 miles from the place, so it takes some planning and extra money to make the trip; otherwise I'd be headed up there this week-end!
Enjoy your stay!
Mary

I'm a Wisconsinite at heart! I actually live about a 1/2 hour from the WI border. I have been going up to the Northwoods, to a little resort near Birchwood for about 13 years now. It's approx. 400 miles from where I live. That particular resort sold out last year, but I found another one about three spots down from where I use to stay, which I'll be going to the second week in July. I just love it up there.

I know where Rice Lake is Mary, because I usually go there at least once during my trip to by Cheese at Millers, and go to the shopping Mall. I've also gone through Bruce and Bloomer when I'm heading to Birchwood. I usually go through LadySmith on 67/70 I think thats the route #. I also go to Hayward a lot too. It's beautiful country up there.

Hey Mary or Birky will you be up there then? I also don't live too far from Cort, in IL. About 1/2 hour drive. Maybe a lunch meeting could be arranged sometime when you're passing through.

Hey Jim I think any one who makes frequent trips to WI, should be honary residents! :D

Chris, I've been to Eagle River quite a few times too. Another lovely area! :)

Bonnie, from where you live thats a long drive! Like Cort said, we could have met up with you! Yeah, even in the summer I always bring some warm clothes, cause you never know!

Linda, yeah I've had Kringles! Love them!

Thanks, Lorraine, for the honorary residency! I lived in Wisconsin for seven years (my wife for longer). On our last trip, we saw again the quonset hut we lived in on a dairy farm on the west side of Grafton. We also found the exact park bench where I proposed overlooking Lake Michigan (although someone moved the park bench, changed the trees around some, etc).

You aren't far from me, then, Mary.....hint hint hint ;).

Cort,
If we make the trip this summer, I will let you know in plenty of time so we can try to meet up. :) :)
It's time to expand our horizons and try to do some "reunioning" to the North!;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Lorraine,
Boy, do I know Miller's Cheese House! We always brought their brochures home and ordered from them at Christmas!
We usually make one trip to Hayward; if I remember correctly, Birchwood is on the way (?) It takes us about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there, so we aren't very far from you at all.
I still don't know if/when we're going for sure. After posting to Marcia's thread yesterday, I told my husband that I wanted to make the trip North. He just grunted, but that's typical. :p :p :p
My best guess is that it will be early August, but that's only a guess. We normally spend one night in the Rockford/Beloit/Madison area on the way up; if you wanted to meet for dinner, we could pick a location that would be closer to both you and Cort.
This would be the first trip back since my mom died. I've never been there without her, and I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that reality. That's the main obstacle for now, but I'll see how I feel in the upcoming weeks. I know I have to take the plunge sometime.:)

Lorraine, Cort, Mary.

Keep us posted. If you plan something....it would be great to meet up. Have so much planned this summer....hopefully dates will match!;) :)

My next trip...after Texas will be Door County, WI, Then Napa, San Francisco. Wisconsin again, Florida. Once school starts...we are tied down until break/s :D. We do love to travel:)

I am wearing a pink baseball hat..that has DOOR COUNTY..on it..:D :D :D Bought it a month ago in Sturgeon Bay...Beautiful area..but cold..even a month ago...Bonnie

Hmmm...which reminds me ... plenty of time to make plans to meet up with ya'll in Texas again when I'm there in October this year :).

Milwaukee Music Festival

Milwaukee Music Festival

My whole extended family is getting together at my brother's outside of Madison the weekend of July 4th. I believe he's taking us to the Music Festival in Milwaukee either Saturday or Sunday, not sure which. If anyone on this board is going to that, give me a holler.
