Hi Freddie,

I tested yesterday at 4.7 so I halved my dose yesterday and today and will go back to regular dose tomorrow. I also enjoyed some V-8 (over and above my usual weekly amount) and had spinach souffle for dinner.

This happens occasionally to me for no particular reason. I just adjust around it but never really worry because I know I am in control.

Some medications will throw a wrench in your INR and you just have to go for the ride for a while with dosage changes. Just a hint - it might be easier to help you with dosage adjustments by keeping track of the total weekly dose as well (for people who are math challenged as I am ). Adjustments are most always done from that weekly total. But good job on keeping track of your doses!

I have been on birth control pills since April for a premenopausal issue. They have really jacked around my INR. It has been frustrating. I'm currently taking almost 1/2 the coumadin I was prior to starting and I'm having to change my dose about every 2 weeks.

I think your issues may resolve once you aren't on the meds causing the fluctuations. And since it appears to be raising your INR - don't be afraid to keep your INR a little high so that when you go off the med you don't go too low.

Best wishes.

I've been testing every week since May 21st, when the lab results came back as 3.8 I was taking 6mg daily.
June 4 - INR 4.3 - started on 5mg for a week
June 11 - INR 3.7 - continued with 5mg
June 18 - INR 3.6 - Started to alternate 4 & 5mg
June 25 - INR 2.1 - back to 5mg for a week
July 2nd - INR 2.0 - 6mg for the week
July 9 - INR 4.9 - took 3mg for 2 days then alternate 5 & 6mg
July 11 - INR 2.5 - alternate 5 & 6mg
July 16 - INR 2.0 - back to 6mg/wk
July 24 - INR 2.7 (monitor-2.9) stayed on 6mg
July 30 - INR 3.4 (monitor got hot in the sun and read 4.1 - got the same reading twice)
** took 5mg on Thurs & Sat. and 6mg on Fri, Sun, Mon,Tues, Wed.
Aug. 6 - INR 3.3 (monitor - 3.5) continued with the above dosing
Aug 14 - INR 2.7 (monitor - 3.0) dosing did not change/ but getting a cold
Aug. 27 - INR 4.1 (monitor 4.3) dosing is now 5mg along with new this new drug with me having bronchitis.

Hi Freddie
So your dose is changed almost every week. Why do you expect your INR won't change right along with it. I think you're test result is being chased instead of allowing it to settle down. Remember it takes 3-4 days to metabolize. For a 4.1-4.2 result the most I'd drop is 2 mgs for the week and wait and see what happens.

Thank-you everyone for your responses.

Lance, I do understand what your saying and do know that with a new dosage it takes 3-4 days to metabolize. But the doctor wanted to keep a closer eye on what my INR was doing after just a few days during the time of July 9th to the 16th. All the other tests where done after 5 to 6 days.
