good article. My dr (after nearly 20 yrs of being his patient) retired 7/31. No patient was notified. Now we have no doctor. I am so disappointed in him. What are we, his patients, to do now. We had a very good rapport and a long history. I feel like he has 'left' me in the lurch. There are many here who feel as I do.

anyhow, give this a look. Sometimes a VR member is in a quandry as to how to conclude that things aren't working with the doctor. Here's something to help you:

> KNOW WHEN IT'S TIME TO FIRE YOUR DOCTOR

Dr. Jerome Groopman knew he needed to break up with his doctor.

That is awful, he didn't let you know and help you find a new doctor.Altho when Justin was little both his ped card and heart surgeon left, They DID let us know and sent us info incase we wanted to continue going to them. The problm was, we lived outside philly, their new hospital was in Switzerlnd, I still kind of chuckle when I think back about the letter about how it was close to the airport and beautiful overlooking lake Geneva. Luckily Justin was going thru a good few years then and didn't need surgery, because we decded to stay local for his checkups BUT I decided IF he needed surgery I guess i could stock up on chocolate and watches. It worked out well tho, they were out of the country for about 5 years, 3 months after they came back Justin ended up needing ER heart surgery.

I DO need to fire MY doctor tho, almost everything in the article is a red flag that I knew, I have just been lazy and putting it off since it is kind of a pain to switch to new doctors, BUt I will.

I wouuld like to add to the list.

#6. When your GP cancels your appointment (without asking) even though he knows you are trying to get well enought to have OHS. It happen to me :(

Anyone else care to add to the list?

Ann:

A physician usually sells his practice, or if he was in a group practice, another physician takes over those patients or another physician is brought in to handle that workload.

I work in advertising for a newspaper, and we frequently run advertisements that "Dr. XYZ is retiring. Patients can be picked up ..." or "The medical practice of Dr. XYZ has closed due to his death. Patients can pick up their medical records by calling 123-456-7890..."

The cnn.com article is pretty good.

Our PCP is my age (57), and I am already contemplating the day he retires and we have to search for a new family doctor who is INR-knowledgeable and willing to let me continue home testing.
Years ago, I thought it would be easier to find a new family doctor than a new breeder-friendly veterinarian. But that was BC (Before Coumadin).

With all of the business we have given them, the least a retiring doctor can do out of courtesy is to give his patients time to look for another doctor.

I would like add # 8:

When GP says your heart cath looked good but the report clearly states the valve must be replaced.

Karl

I agree that the doc should have given lots of notice....common courtesy.
When my previous GP left his pratice, I could not tolerate his replacement, he was real creepy....I was lucky enough to find another amazing doctor.

Nope, nobody knew. He had an office uptown for 30 years and one day he called his staff in, fired them all, told them he was closing up shop - and did. The staff was extremely upset - I know because I called for an appt and one of them still there that day told me the whole story and how awful it was for them. Then he joined up with the hospital's clinic where he was until 7/31. My cousin called About August 2 or 3rd for rx refills and was told he retired July 31st and they will TRY to find a dr to replace him and that a nurse practitioner would be filling rxes until another dr was there to fill his place - then same day they called her back and cancelled. I found out from my cousin that our dr is gone. Nothing has been in the paper. She called the pharmacy and out of courtesy, the pharmacy was filling all patients' rxes he had been writing - for another month so that patients can find another dr! Doesn't that beat all????
I am so ticked.

Same thing happened to us some years back.
We received a letter in January telling us he retired at the end of the year.
With three kids we had to scramble. He was a good doctor but that really ticked me off.
Another guy did take over his practice but he was a real creep. He advised ALL his patients to come in on a regular basis to receive IV's of vitamins. I never heard of something like that before or since. Of course we dumped him real fast. Not too long after that we heard he was kicked out of the medical profession.
It isn't easy finding good doctors, I hope all mine stick around for awhile.

For the record, my recent cath was clear, but still need AVR due to BAV. But that's from the cardio doc, not the GP, which I really don't have one

The cath was done to see if any blockages would need to be taken care of while my chest is already opened up ...

Clean bill of health, but one pesky valves gotta get fixed ...

when you need to divorce/fire your doctor

when you need to divorce/fire your doctor

I guess I am a little tired. I read the above and thought;

Why on earth would someone already dealing with the a divorce want to fire their Dr.? As they say NEVERMIND.

Dennis, I had to chuckle about your post.

Actually, my divorce was long ago and he IS a doctor, so I guess that headline applies to my own individual circumstance.:p
