Did many people come home from the hospital on lovenox shots until their INR was in range? I must have missed comments about that as this is the first I have heard patients coming home after surgery on lovenox injections.

Hi MN mom,
You have a good attitude given your situation and you're moving forward. What else can we do except try, and that is what you are doing. One day at a time, and it will get better each day.

I hope it goes well with cardiac rehab and with the shots/coumadin. It is alot to deal with and you had surgery only 3 weeks ago. You are doing wonderfully! Keep up the good work and progress.

I am at 7 weeks post surgery and many things have improved greatly in the last month. My INR readings are up and down still and it is still getting adjusted. Sometime I feel like they don't know what to give me, and then I realize that it all takes time to adjust.

Hang in there! It will get better. (by the way, I am a Minnesota mom too from Coon Rapids)

Wishing you well and a smooth recovery!

I had never heard of giving myself shots until two days after I got home from Mayo, and my local coumadin nurse at my town clinic told me I would need them. I was shocked, and so soon after surgery getting my blood drawn and then being told about shots I was flabergasted! It is a good thing to know going in, about the possibility. Maybe that should be a new thread in pre-op- what no one ever told you might happen!

I was in the hospital 6 days, they started my coumadin dose at 2 mg from day 2 post op. On day 6, my INR was at 1.6. I was ready to get out of there. The agreement was to let me go home the Monday before Thanksgiving, lovenox twice a day, visit the coumadin clinic the following Friday, then schedule visits with the clinic until I was in range. It took a while to get me in range. If my INR dropped below 2, I had to do the lovenox, I had 4 courses of lovenox over 2 to 3 months.

I came home with INR very low but didn't have to use Lovenox. I came home on a Tuesday, was at clinic for testing on Friday and was still very low. They increased my dose every time I was tested and though I got up to 88 mg per week, I never reached range before I was permitted to stop.

I have a bovine valve so I can only think it wasn't as critical to get me in range???

I've read here of some people with tissue valves who never took warfarin.

I had a tissue valve and never needed to take coumadin. This is all new to me.
