HI Pamela, and Amanda, your dad is a great guy! He replied to a thread that I wrote about my husband Kevin, who is in the Navy, and his post meant so much to me. I am so glad to hear that he did so well in the surgery! It won't be long and he will be back home with you guys! It's great that you got to fly back here to be with your mom and your dad for this time. It will make things a lot easier on your dad!

Hang in there Walter! We're all here rooting for you!

Hi Amanda and Pamela-

You're doing so well with the updates. And I'm so happy that Walter is doing great. Isn't it a miracle?

He'll be home before too long.

Pam or Amanda - Your dad sounds like he is making good, fast progress. Walking is one of those big steps towards recovery. It will be great to hear from him when he gets out, which I am guessing will be soon.

Daddy is doing GREAT

Daddy is doing GREAT

Hi everyone,

This is Amanda. I just got home from the hospital. Dad was moved out of ICU this afternoon to a private room. He is doing remarkably well. He had lunch and dinner, although he didnt really eat much...and who could blame him- mystery meat and runny potatos. He is get very excited when the nurse gave him a glass of diet coke. I thought he was going to cry from the joy !! He said it was better than wine....ha !

I can't remember what my sister posted earlier, but basically today he had his chest tube removed this morning, and his oxygen thing on his nose was taken off in the afternoon. He didn't sleep as much today, he has been up walking 4 times already. My sister was walking back into his ICU room when she saw a wheelchair being rolled out...thinking they were taking my dad out for a walk, she noticed no one was sitting in the chair...then she sees dad pushing it out himself ! He wanted to walk from his ICU room to the elevator up to the 6th floor and walk into his new room. He is too much. He is still really sore, and is very tired, although he is sleeping alot, and he keeps complaining about how dry he is. He is still taking morphine, I think thats why is BP is low (average 88/54). His breathing scares me a little when he sleeps, but the nurse said it's ok...his whole body shakes as he breathes.

I do have a question though, has anyone ever heard of having itchy feet as a result of the morphine ? His toes are so itchy it's driving him nuts !

More updates tomorrow...thanks for listening !

Amanda

BETTER THAN WINE??????? HA!!

BETTER THAN WINE??????? HA!!

Hi Amanda.....your Dad sounds like he's doing fabulously!! So glad to hear he's up and walking. Tell him for us that he MUST be delusional if he thinks Diet Coke is better than wine!!!! Remember, naps and walking are both good. I remember when Tyce was 2 days post op, he would fall asleep in the middle of a sentence.

Please give him our best wishes and tell him he's doing great, although he'll probably laugh at that one, no maybe he'll grimace because laughing hurts too much!!

How is he doing with the spirometer?

Thanks for posting.

Evelyn

I understand what he means about the diet Coke. The drugs made me so I either couldn't taste anything or water tasted bad. I needed something with a "bite" to it so they gave me 7up.

Thanks for the update Amanda.

Hi again,

It's been a while since I've posted about how Dad's doing, but he's kept us busy! Last night (his second night after the surgery), he had a rough night. His O2 levels dropped below 90 (87) so put him back on O2 for a while, he got a slight fever (100.1) and his blood pressure was dropping. (At one point systolic pressure was 52, but I think he might have been moving and the reading was off). The first thing they did for his pressure was to lower his head, but he didn't like that at all. He was sweating profusely and coughing, restless and couldn't get comfortable. The nurse called his surgeon Dr. Jex sometime after 11:00pm (he was in the OR) and he told her to administer albumin which would (as she explained it) take the fluid that had been accumulating in his tissues back into his bloodstream thereby raising his blood pressure and helping him get rid of the excess fluid. That seemed to work after a bit and his BP got above 90. From 11pm to 2:00 am he got no sleep. The poor guy kept worrying about his blood pressure like there was something he could do about it. It was being measured every 5 minutes and he'd ask me to tell him what it was. When it was below 80 he looked crestfallen, and when it was in the 90s he was so proud of himself! While this was going on, a respiratory nurse came in and had Dad blow on a nebulizer. It looked like Dad was puffing on a big white plastic cigar! He said it worked pretty good, but he was coughing all night long still. Oh, they also gave him some Milk of Magnesium earlier in the evening but that didn't have any noticable effect. Around 3am Amanda came to relieve me and she told us that after I left he improved a lot - his fever went down, more O2 in his blood, stopped coughing and got some sleep. (This makes me very happy, but also worried that I might be bad luck for him, since only when I was on duty did he have a tough time!) But my fears are allayed by the fact that I'm with him right now and he's having a great night. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

This morning Mom went over to relieve Amanda and he had his breakfast, went on a couple walks, and was doing really well. Later on he burshed his teeth, had a shower and I think that really boosted his spirits (it's amazing what a difference being clean can be!)

I personally haven't seen his incision, (I'm the quesey one in the family) but Amanda says she was really suprised to see how thin clean and neat it is. Dad's coumidin level is currently 1.6. He was sleeping from 7 to around 11 straight (just one interruption when one of his doses ran out.) He's up now, I read him some of the posts and he's watching "mindless tv" while I type this.

He hopes that he'll be able to post for himself soon, and hopes everyone is doing well. He also says everyone is probably tired about hearing about himself since Amanda and I are so detailed in our posts! Sorry about that!

G'night for now,
Pamela

PS. Evelyn, about the spirometer - he was up to 2000 this afternoon. About 2/3 of the way there! (He was 3000-3500 pre-op)

HELLO ALL......

SO VERY GLAD TO HEAR YOUR DAD HAS SETTLED IN. IT'S UPSETTING FOR ANYONE TO HAVE A BAD TIME AND SOMETIMES I THINK EVEN MORE UPSETTING FOR THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEM.......AND DON'T THINK FOR ONE SECOND THAT WE THINK YOUR POSTS ARE TOO DETAILED!!! I HOPE YOU'RE ABLE TO SAVE ALL POSTS IN A PRINTED OUT VERSION AS "DAD'S VR.COM MEMOIRS!!"

HAVING ONLY TYCE'S SURGERY AND ST. FRANCIS HOSPITAL TO COMPARE, I FIND IT VERY INTERESTING TO OBSERVE THE DIFFERENCES IN HOSPITAL PROCEDURES I KNOW THAT TYCE WASN'T ALLOWED TO TAKE A SHOWER LIKE YOUR DAD HAS DONE ALREADY....THAT DEFINITELY WAS A BIG THING FOR HIM WHEN HE CAME HOME. HE ALSO DIDN'T HAVE ANY SUPPLEMENTAL O2 ADMINISTERED---NOT IN CICU OR IN THE ROOM. THEY DID KEEP HIS CHEST TUBE AND CATHETER IN A DAY OR TWO LONGER THAN YOUR DAD'S....AND HE HAD TO USE THE SPIROMETER AT LEAST ONCE EVERY TWO HOURS (HE USED IT ONCE AN HOUR BECAUSE HE WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH PNEUMONIA HE TOLD ME) AND WALK AT LEAST 280FT. FOUR TIMES A DAY. HE WAS UP IN HIS CHAIR PRETTY MUCH ALL DAY FROM THE TIME THEY BROUGHT HIM OVER TO HIS ROOM FROM ICU. IT'S ALSO NICE THAT YOU GUYS CAN BE WITH HIM ROUND THE CLOCK....TYCE'S HOSPITAL HAD VISITING FROM NOON TILL 8 AND AT 10 THE PHONES WERE TURNED OFF TILL 8 THE NEXT MORNING.

ANYWAY, I'M REALLY GLAD TO HEAR HE'S DOING WELL.....AND AS SOON AS TYCE WAKES UP I'LL TELL HIM---I KNOW HE'LL BE HAPPY, TOO. PLEASE KNOW WE'RE THINKING OF YOU ALL LOTS AND LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR POSTS.

GIVE YOUR DAD A BIG KISS FOR US, BUT DON'T HUG HIM AS IT MAY HURT TOO MUCH!!! HE'S STILL IN OUR PRAYERS, AS ARE YOU ALL.

EVELYN

Thanks, Pam - You are giving us such good reports on your dad. You may want to print all the posts, because down the road after he has forgotten all of this there will be questions from newcomers and he will be able to contribute from your posts to us. I kept a small diary and have been back over it and couldn't recall much of what was in the diary, but lo, there it was for me to tell others.

Your dad is so lucky to have you all there to help him along. My nurse cousin stayed with me to make sure all went well from her perspective. Such a comfort to have someone to see to your wellbeing. Think when the family is there 'on guard' the staff may be a bit more on their toes.

Walter - sounds like once you get another day or so you will be well on the mend. Prayers are going from everywhere for you and your lovely family. Ross is still in the hospital but think he is going to be fine before long - just a slow go for him, but he did tell us he would have a tough row to hoe. Alan (Amy's husband) seems to be coming along now. And we have a couple surgeries scheduled for this week. Need you back home to us so hurry, now. God bless

Hi Pam and Amanda-

You gals are doing a SUPER job for your dad and in filling his online friends in.

Walter, we all know that this bumpy road will straighten out and you'll be on the straight road to recovery soon. You're really keeping the nurses and docs on their toes. My husband has a habit of doing that also. It gets you the best of care. So there is an upside. LOL :p

I hope things settle down for you today. Take care,

hi pam and amanda!
thank you for your wonderful postings! they are spectacular!
i'm so glad to hear that your dad is doing better. it must have been very scary for you last night!
sometimes there are these bumps in the road we have to contend with. fortunately, they usually iron out and
things go easier from then on.
i hope walter's recovery continues smoothly and please send him our best.
also, maybe you girls should try and get some rest?
stay well and thanks again for the great updates,
sylvia

Salute

Hi Walter,

Your progress has been pretty much as we all expected from a fine military man such as yourself. You've done everything "by the book" and taken the hill (mountain) as per schedule. There will be no further backsliding, sir,and you will remain in complete control from here on.

Your "troops" and "support staff" are doing a fine job too. Your security is being guarded day and night. Communications are clear and timely. Your (family) unit has performed admirely, as I'm sure you realize by now.

We salute all of you for making this mission so successful thus far. The rest (recovery) will take some time, but the worst part in behind you.

Good job, sir!

Ron K

Way to go Walter--Thanks

Your posts and now your progress are an inspiration to me. I am the new guy here and had my heart catherization done the same time as your surgery. So you are leading the way for me as so many others have.

I was thrilled to find these posts about your wonderful progress. You have some great folks out here pulling for you.

Don't think I have the strength of character to be singing "Off to see the wizard" without some mighty potent drugs altering my perceptions. My cap is off to you, sir.

Best Wishes for continued speedy recovery.

Hope you are reading this Walter and please take great care of your self and be proud of your girls posting your progress. Keep hanging in there. You wll get better in time.

Dear Walter:

Sounds like you had a hiccup in the recovery process. But, your Dr. sounds like he was on the right track!

We are looking forard to your posts again!! Best wishes for a hiccup free recovery.

Pam and Amanda - Thanks for the stories on your fathers recovery. It seems like he is doing great. I like the way you tagteam so he almost always has company. I'm sure he will be on his way home soon and you can all relax and have a diet coke.

Dad's home

Dad's home

Dad was released this afternoon! He's home now in the recliner watching Judge Judy. He was given the following prescriptions to take home:

Lasix for his heart
Potassium Chloride for his heart
Levaquin for infection
Lortab for pain
Asprin for heart
Lipitor for cholesterol
Pericolase for stool softener
Coumadin (5 mg) for heart
Altace for blood pressure

He used to be on Diavan for his blood pressure, but they changed it to Altace. We also brought in the multi-vitamins Dad takes, but the cardiologist said that he should stop taking these as most everything is over 100% of the RDA and some of the vitamins/minerals on the ingredient list interfere with Coumadin. Instead, he can take Centrum - Regular which apparently does not exceed the RDAs or accepted intakes.

Thanks to all for reading our posts on Walter, and I hope that hearing about how Dad's surgery and recovery went have encouraged those who are waiting for their own operations. Seriously, I think waiting to have the operation was almost harder for everyone (patient and family) than the time spent in the hospital. My family also sends their best wishes to Ross, Alan, and all those waiting for their surgeries.

Thanks again,
Pamela
