Neither my insurance carrier (a good one) nor the government paid for my monitor. I bought it myself. Insurance carrier says blood clinics are everywhere and paid by OHIP and monitors are not approved under OHIP as "medical appliances". However, the monitor and all supplies are tax deductible so that helps somewhat. If I remember correctly the cost was around $1500. That included the monitor, electronic quality control, and chemical control solutions. I'm not sure if the first box of strips was included or not. Thy run about $90 for a box of 12. Two strips from every box are used for testing of the monitor so that leaves 10 for blood tests. If you're interested, Jake in the pharmacy at TGH knows a lot about them and Sue knows a lot more. You would need a prescription from a doctor to purchase it though. Hope this helps
Following six years of blood tests the vein in my arm is collapsing and I'm not really enamoured of blood tests from the back of my hand so I'm happy to give the vein a rest.
