Her surgeon just came out to talk to us, and his description of the surgery was "It was technically extremely difficult but she did wonderfully". The best news was that he fixed the original incision which was way too thick and lumpy due to it having been done at a teaching hospital. He said his incisions are usually straight down and half the length, but had he done that, there would have been a portion of skin between the two scars which could have died. But he fixed the lumpiness and said it will heal beautifully.
Her aortic valve was extremely calcified, and he explained that there was a problem with calcification higher up as well, so they had to repair more than they originally thought. She got a 21 carbometrix valve in place (not sure what that means, but he says it's great). They also had to remove part of the septum due to calcification. Part of her aorta was diseased which could have caused a stroke when it was clamped off. That scared the ever living heck out of us, but the anesthesiologist came out about 5 seconds later and said that she was awake, responding to questions, and moving everything on request. He asked if she was in pain and she held up her hand to indicate "a little".
We have about one hour until we get to see her, and
I probably will not post again tonight because we are exhausted and will spend the next few hours with her before we head home. Knowing my mom, the first thing she will want to do tomorrow (besides drink some decaf coffee and eat something) will be to post on this forum. So stay tuned in the "post-surgery" thread. I know she is happy to "graduate" to that group.
Thanks again for your support. I know that everything she learned on this forum convinced her to go through with this, which just happened to be at the perfect time. The doctor was very glad that we did not put this off any longer. Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
