Hey guys!
I just wanted to update you all and let you know I've been lurking alot, but not really posting. . .
its been a crazy start to the year. I've been very busy and most of it is non heart related! Everything has been going pretty well, I am very happy that I continue to have no new heart related issues to report (yeah yeah the same old stuff applies, but I continue to learn to deal with it and work around it, I learned last fall that I was pretty anemic which was exacerbating my symptoms big time and has somewhat resolved with oral iron replacement, still an issue though that is being followed)

I am also happy to report I am in my first major (VERY major) long term relationship! This is very new to me, we had alot of stuff to work through in the beginning related alot to my fear of/not expecting a guy to want to commit/deal with the CHD issues, but he's a keeper! He's totally been there, and wants to be there for me. He's into learning about my heart and what implications it has on us, and is planning on going to my appt in Boston in April. We're going to have the "can we have kids" talk with them. I dont expect us to be having kids right off, but this is his big question/concern related to my heart issues. I fully expect a yes, but also sort (maybe) of expect a possible big workup and maybe them saying "we need to plan this well, may need to fix some things first" kind of response as far as my valve issues go, but that depends on how things are progressing. I am having my first cardiac MRI this time, so I am kind of nervous, but excited that they will get an awesome picture and be able to delineate some things (esp the ?VSD patch leak and ?aortic aneurysm risk) which will put us in a better place to answer the "kids" question ultimately. . . does anyone have any ideas related to this? (see below for my diagnoses)

We've been working on figuring out Birth Control, so far the last pack of pills I was on (was on my 2nd round, its a 90 day pack, seasonale) was causing lots of issues with irregular bleeding/spotting/VERY heavy periods, so recently I've switched to Ortho Tri-Cyclen by my GP's Nurse Practitioner, and I'm hoping this is a better choice. . . My Boyfriend wants to use a condom till we go to boston, to make sure pregnancy isnt an issue in the meantime, so I dont have to worry anyways, but I'm still concerned. My cardio had no reservations on what birth control method I use. My other option given to me by my GP's NP was Mirena, especially in light of the heavy periods on seasonale and my anemia. If this pill doesnt work I think I am going to try Mirena, does anyone here have any experience here with seasonale/ortho tri-cyclen/Mirena or any other ideas? I havent heard much on Mirena in ACHD patients, but ultimately if it will decrease my periods the way it does many peoples I hopefully will be able to increase my blood counts more than I already have. I'm guessing there's an infection risk, right? did you have to take pre-antibiotics before if you've gotten one? Any other advice related to this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Hon. so good to see you. I, too, have been an absent member for awhile.

congratulations on your new happiness. I am way too old to answer questions about birth control so I am just going to wish you well and leave that to a way younger bunch.

It's really good that you are dealing well with your heart stuff and pray that the good part will continue for you. Still going to school?

Blessins, young'un.

So good to hear from you and how happy you are in your relatitonship.
Being on coumadin will be a factor for a pregnancy I'm sure you know.
Will you be permanently on coumadin or is that a temporary thing?
Which hospital are you going to in Boston?

You've come such a long way in dealing with your heart issues and you'll do fine with whatever plan they have for you. You're strong and now have a partner to help you along.

Wishing you much happiness and good health.

Hey Morgan, great to hear from you. I'm glad that you found a good guy who will love you for who you are.
These guys are sometimes difficult to find, so enjoy your new direction in life with him.
Can't help with the b/c questions. Best wishes !!!

Nice to hear from you and so glad that things are going well for you especially in the 'relationship' department!

Here is a link to frequently asked questions on various forms of birth control for females with congenital heart defects and it includes discussion of the Mirena.
If you are experiencing heavy menstural cyles, then the Mirena may be of some help in that department (of course that will need to be discussed ith you and your GP). Just make sure that you ask for some pain killers beforehand as it can be a bit of an unpleasant experience if you haven't had children. You will also want to know if you require antibiotic prophylaxis for this procedure as well!
Good luck with your decisions!

Hey guys!
Thanks for the replies and advice! I really appreciate it! I will check out that webinar when I have time!
The one thing I have going for me is a S/O who is very involved and invested! I will keep everyone up to date when we figure out what Boston says!
In the mean time, I'm sorry its taken me a while to respond, I've been really sick with a chest cold. My cycle still hasnt regulated its self (I've been spotting for over 2 weeks), and I'm guessing this is probably why. . . not to mention things havent had time to settle out. . . I'm hoping time will let things settle out eventually

JKM7 I am going to childrens hospital, boston BACH center, I am not on coumadin (yet)
Ottowagal, thanks for the advice on the mirena, thats what I've heard, which makes me nervous, but whatever, I'll deal with it if I have to make that choice. . .
