I will need a 2nd AVR to replace my CE bovine valve and would like some recommendations for Virginia surgeons and hospitals where they do a lot of these. My local town does few and my local cardiologist has been unresponsive to requests for referrals to my previous surgeon (not local) who requires referrals. Therefore I need a hospital to do its own tests and work with that surgeon and a new cardiologist outside my local market.

My next valve most likely will not be tissue since this one lasted 10 years and I'm 65 and don't want more surgeries. Any suggestions would be great. This is a wonderful forum that has helped so many so I'm lucky to have such support.

Thank you

Alan Speir of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Associates in Fairfax and Inova Fairfax hospital. Actually any of the surgeons in that practice are good. My cardiologist left shortly before I moved, so I can't make a recommendation for that.

What part of Virginia are you in?

That is a great suggestion only about 1.5 hrs away. Dr Speir I think was one of the surgeons I consulted about 10 years ago.

I'm 53, in VA also, had BAV replacement and an ascending aortic aneurysm repaired. I had 3 weeks between diagnosis and surgery. I met with several surgeons at Virginia hospitals. I fortunately made my way to Dr. Kaushik Mandal at Johns Hopkins, best choice I ever made, ever. Per his recommendation I went with a mechanical valve and all is well 16 months post surgery. I have never trusted a doctor this much in my life. Good luck.
