I live in Osaka, which is about 40 minutes by train from Kyoto, so I often go there on weekends. Kyoto is actually a very big city (over 1 million people) but there are over 1500 temples and shrines, so there are lots of places to escape.
Here's a picture I took a few years ago of the Japanese maple leaves, which have become so famous around the world. The leaves haven't changed yet, so I don't have any photos from this year.
