Ski! I have hurt myself twice recently - once when my surf ski (kayak, which I was no longer in . . .) got picked up by a wave and slammed into my head. Big lump. Paddled 1/2 hour back to the start point, went to the hospital, no-one was worried.

Second time did a jump on my mountain bike, foot slipped off my spiked pedal which then slammed into my shin - it bled a bit more than I'd expect if I wasn't on warfarin but nowhere near as badly as I thought it might.

My INR is 3.0-ish.

So . . . ski! Maybe not directly into any trees . . . :)

I say enjoy your life and practice caution. I plan to go back snowboarding again this winter. Going to stick to blues as well.

Ditto the "Gym Guy"

If you enjoy the slopes, then go out and do it. I have not been on skis since my surgery in April, but I plan on it and also will be wearing a helmet. My activities have not changed, but I do plan better and try to minimize the risk. In the past I always ran a chainsaw with only jeans and steel toe boots. I now have saw stopping chaps and full face and head protection.

I have decided to give it a go and SKI this winter! Will wear a helmet and ski the easier stuff.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing!
I will ski this winter but will do so with a helmet on and will ski easier stuff. Maybe will try to limit the skiing to half days so that I am less fatigued.

Gym Guy,
Thanks for sharing!
I will stick to the easy stuff and ski half days for starters. Plus will wear a helmet.Looking forward to a fun family vacation!

Ski Girl,
Thanks for sharing!
Looking to buy a helmet from REI then will be good to go!
See that you are from Perth. I visited Perth for a few days when my Dad was stationed at Woomera,S.A. (USAF)
Beautiful city in a beautiful country!

So, I just have to share how stupid I thought this was when I read it last week. So much so I could not reply. Why on earth would someone snow ski while on coumadin? However, the next day, with a little trepidation, I went to an indoor mountain bike park. I had a ball! Now I am just not so sure which was dumberer skiing, mountain biking or me. I think me. I hope you have as much fun as I did.

Go for it, a helmet is a sensible decision whether you're a cyborg or not - I laugh at the puny un-helmeted biological beings... Well, at least 'til I get my new carbon fibre skull fitted.

I'm planning my first boarding trip up a mountain in 3 yrs in Feb, which will be umm... 8 months post endocarditis/MMVR for me. Can't wait... :) GLHF!

Heheh Scott glad to hear you got out (in?) for some fun despite the anticoagulants! The only thing I won't risk is getting hurt somewhere far from help. Apart from that, I intend to make my new heart parts reach their potential! I want to LIVE, not EXIST.

A couple weekends ago I was in an ocean paddling race when a couple guys paddled up next to me and said 'don't panic, but there's a shark behind you'. Followed by discussion about it being HUGE. At first I was worried about the effect of being on warfarin if I was to get bitten by the shark (turned out to be a 4m great white) but then I thought WHAT A WAY TO GO OUT!!!

[Anyway if it took a limb off I'd bleed to death about the same speed as non-warfarinised people.]
