Breakfast Basket

Breakfast Basket

It's quite common for people here in Brazil to give people a breakfast basket on special occasions. Mother's Day is no exception. This morning, I sent one to my mother, and here's a picture of it. Maybe this is a good business idea for you guys in the States. Do you think it could catch on?

Debora,

I do gift baskets part-time. I have never done a breakfast basket but it is a great idea.

Happy Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day!!

Happy Mother's Day!!

Gina,

Thanks for the beautiful poem. It made me think of one my sister sent to me a few days ago. I thought she wrote it about our Mom. This IS my mom... she always had that apron on and she was always doing all of these things with it. It fits her so perfectly I was surprised when she said someone else had sent it to her.

I printed it out and copied a picture of my Mom in one of her aprons to the page.

My Mama?s Apron

The principle use of Mom's apron was to protect the dress underneath,
but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the
oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was
even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks,
and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And
when the weather was cold, Mom wrapped it around her arms. Those big
old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been
shelled it carried out the hulls. In the fall the apron was used to bring
in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much
furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Mom walked out onto the porch, waved her apron,
and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace
that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes
.

I talk to my Mom every single day. I still need her.... and she?s still there. I love you, Mom!!

Rain,

Thanks for sharing. We both to seem to have similar memories. My mom would use her apron to bring in apples from our backyard tree to make applesauce. We had a bunch of shelves around the perimeter of the stairs to our basement and those shelves were always filled with jars of homemade applesauce. I can still recall the taste without too much effort - slightly tart, lots of cinnamon :) :) :)

I often ask myself why I don't take the time to make applesauce but I haven't come up with an answer that I find acceptable.

It's a big success here!

It's a big success here!

What sort of gifts, Gina? Here they even make basket for children which they love getting on their birthdays. There are also very nice ones for Valentine's Day, you name it! I just phoned this place last night and got them to delliver one at my mum's house with a card and some flowers too. The lady brought it at about 7:30am, but my mum hasn't opened it yet because she wants to show it to the other family members first. One thing's for sure, if you decide to start something like that there, people will love it, I mean, I don't know of one single person who wouldn't love to wake up and find out there's a big tasty breakfast waiting! You get them in different sizes and prices, of course, and there are some that are really fancy just like a five star hotel breakfast. Hope you're having a nice day too.
Débora :)

Debora,

I do gift baskets for all occasions just haven't done breakfast ones. Mostly I do gift baskets for realtors to present to new home buyers the day they move in. Some retail, mostly holiday types - Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, etc.

I love the breakfast idea. I think it would be a good fit for the realtor group so the new home owners can have a great first breakfast.

Hope you don't mind my "stealing" your idea???? If you were closer to the states, I would send you one as a "thank you", but I think it would be a mess by the time one got to Brazil. :( :(

Happy Mother's Day everyone. It has been a real strange week for me and today is as well. My mother has Parkinson's disease and has had for many many years. The last few years she has developed a complication of Parkinson's called Parkinsonian dementia. She has received both outpatient and inpatient care for this. Her sometimes violent behavior and wandering has made providing both the environment and the care she needs very difficult, to say the least. My sisters both live close to my mother and she has been involved in their day to day lives for many years. I have not lived within a 14 hour drive for 33 or more years so the responsibility of her day to day affairs falls on them, and I feel guilty about it but don't know what more I could do for her than I have. This week my mom was admitted involuntarily to a psychiatric facility but within a couple of days was moved to a psychiatric acute care area of a large hospital.

Up until several days ago I could still speak to her on the phone and it seemed like she knew who I was. Not any longer. We are hoping she can get at least back to where she was a few weeks ago so we can celebrate a late Mother's day.

I have had a very busy Mother's Day. Dick and I are watching our 6 and 5 year old granddaughters while our son and daughter-in-law are on an 8 day trip to Sweden. My daughter came in from Boston for the weekend to help out and what a help she was, but now she is gone. I now know why motherhood is for the young! The girls made me beautiful cards this morning and the six year old played the piano and sang a Mother's Day song. When my daughter arrived on Friday, she presented me with a watercolor that she had painted and had framed- a copy of a picture of me holding her as an infant (she is now 36)- beautiful! :) Where do all the years go?
Wishing you all a Happy Mother's Day!
Phyllis

Go ahead!

Go ahead!

Gina, I'm very happy you liked the idea and I wish you all the luck in the world with it. I know that the Americans love their big breakfast so I'm sure it will be a complete success for you! Once you have one ready, post a picture of it so that I can take a look, ok? I'm the curious sort by nature! LOL!!
Débora :)

Betty, so sorry to hear that your mother has taken a turn for the worse and I really hope her condition improves at least a little. I know how hard it must be for you and your sisters to watch her mind deteriorate like this, but it's out of your control to do anything else for her, and I'm sure she feels the love you have to give her. I'll add all of you to my prayers from now on. God bless.

And the world goes on....

And the world goes on....

Bonnie,

What a happy story :D :D Even on the day when some of us are melancholy, there are so many stories that are inspiring and perfect.

Thanks for sharing all the tales of your grandchildren. The "picture" of them running around in the warm sunshine warms my heart. I know motherhood goes on and on even when some moms are no longer with us.

Please keep the stories coming.
