On this, the first day of Mother's day weekend, I wanted to start a tribute thread to all moms. Although my mom has been gone for 2 years, I still honor her on Mother's day.

I hope it doesn't sound morbid but I wanted to share a poem I wrote for her eulogy. It was a poem to honor and remember her life so I think it is fitting for Mother's day. Since I think of all of you as part of a new family, I wanted to introduce you to part of mine. Mom passed away from complications due to Alzheimer's, thus the references to her "vacant eyes" and Mapleknoll, the extended care facility where she lived her last years.

I miss you Mom. Happy Mother's Day.

To Mom:

We grew up never knowing
Where our lives would lead
But we never worried
You gave us all we?d need

You made us beautiful birthday cakes
And Easter baskets filled with treats
Christmas time was magical
With love impossible to beat

We spent days at Coney Island
Had picnics in the park
we had snowball fights in winter
told scary stories in the dark

And as we grew you helped us through
Those awkward teenage years
Were not too harsh when we came home late
Soothed the painful dating tears

You welcomed our spouses with open arms
And then you surprised us all
And moved off by yourself to Florida
To answer some longtime beckoning call

You returned back home to Cincy
To be near grandchildren as they came
Visited Hawaii as you always dreamed
Found your brother and your name

Then life seemed to deal a blow
You seemed to drift away
You had to move to Mapleknoll
And struggle day by day

So we visited and wondered
Were you still inside
Were there thoughts and smiles
Behind your vacant eyes

We hoped you danced through flowering fields
And caught the butterflies
And sat beside the waterfalls
Behind your vacant eyes

We?d sit and wish one more time we could
come inside the world you came to know
and find you playing by the stream
or making angels in the snow.

We wanted to be assured
You really were elsewhere
Than trapped inside the quiet shell
We watched from within our chair

But we also knew you and how you loved
To smile, hug and dream each day
And when we would remember
We would know you were okay

So Mom we miss your smiles
We miss your quirky ways
We miss the chocolate chip cookies and apple pies
you made on baking days.

But we know you finally are at peace
And painfull as it is to not have you here
We see you and Dad off in the distance
Waiting for us someday to join you there

For those of us who, like myself, had a mother who didn't exactly make Mother of the Year, it's important to remember that were it not for her we wouldn't be here and that she did the best she could, and for that we should be very very grateful. [Mom was sort of an Auntie Mame type - terrible mother, but what a great old lady!]

Special Mother's Day...

I drove my (pushin' 90 years old) Mama yesterday 75 miles one-way to her favorite Beauty Shop to get ready for the weekend and I enjoyed every minute of it. I just love her so much and hope she makes it in the good health she is now 'till 100. She told me yesterday that she wasn't "ready to go." :D

She still lives alone on the ranch and recently we 'suggested' that she give up driving and she has. When she turned 88 she had to take her written and driving test in order to renew her license and she passed with flying colors.

I love her stories from the old days..how she rode a horse to school..how her Daddy went to the "woman governor" (Ma Ferguson - 1925) to ask clemency for one of the employees who'd shot (self-defense) a guy in a dancehall and went to prison. Ma Ferguson pardoned him and sent him home. Mama told me how Pedro walked about 10 miles to my Grandpa's house first to thank him and then he walked home to his family. Some years later Pedro was dragged to death by the mules pulling the cultivator....they ran away. I could go on and on....such good stories, such an innocent time.

Happy Mother's Day!

To all Moms out there,

Have a great Mother's Day.
I miss my Mom dreadfully, she has been gone now for 28yrs.
So to all of you out there that are lucky enough to still have your Mothers, treasure them.

Love to you all
Wendy

I miss my Mama so much..she passed away 5 months before my Valve replacement...I still think..I would not be here..if I had not developed a strange burping in my throat..from her passing..That sent me to many doctors ..and finally found one ..who found my aneurysm.....She was my best friend and we talked on telephone EVERYDAY.. she kelp just how badly she felt from us..and died while in Hospital for a rountine.. suppose to be 2 days..taking some fluids for dehydrating ..Was alert during the days in hospital..but, waited to make sure..we were all out of the room..And closed her eyes... :) Janie..glad your Mom is doing so good. my Dad is age 91..lives alone, ect. My brother arranged for him to get a letter from local police department pretending he didn't need to drive anymore..He would hit posts, ect. and come home and paint the car scratches with white household paint..thinking we would not notice. :D He gave up driving..but NOT his car..just keeps it up..oil, ect..Still in his driveway.......Wishing everyone a Very Happy Mother's Day...Bonnie

I laughed so hard Bonnie... My Mama sideswiped the garage and wondered how all that "white paint stripe" got on the side of her car... :D :D :D Her car is blue!

I do not want to hijack this Mother Days thread..but just wanted to add...When I go down every 2-3 months to clean his house..He is just wanting me to drive his car. :D I take it thru a car wash, ect..He just loves riding with me.....with all the white paint and duct tape. :D Talking about stares from people.. :D ..I really feel like a Redneck..but, will not let him know...I pray that I live to be age 90..and put my kids thru this :D :D :D Bonnie

I know Bonnie.......we don't wanna hijack the Mother's Day thread, but the carwash story was just too good. I drove my Mom's car through the carwash yesterday -- was full of dust from sitting in the garage. She sits in the back seat in back of me cause that's on the 'correct' side for her to get in easier. I felt like that guy in "Drivin' Miss Daisy...." :D

She puts on her wildest colored Hawaiian MuMu, her yellow shoes and with the biggest beads she's got 'round her neck and her Chanel purse hung around her neck and we're off to town... :D

Mom's been gone over a dozen years, but there isn't a day go by I don't talk to her...Happy Mother's Day to all.

Mother's day has been bittersweet for me since I lost my Mom in '98 to an aortic disection. I just got back from a 12 hour day of going to pick up our daughter at Michigan State. I came home to 2 dozen red and white tulips that she had sent me for Mother's Day. Ahhhh. Gina, your poem brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing.

Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers, which means any woman that has lovingly filled that role in our lives.

Happy early Mothers day to all the mommies in the world. Mine has been gone since 97, but like so many others, I talk to her daily in my own way.

I had a special tribute to mothers, saved for this day, but computer crashed last week or so and it's just gone.

Happy mother's day for those of you who are one. Or, even if you aren't. You've mothered somebody in one way or another.

Happy Mothers Day!

Ours over here is in mid March, but I'm always happy to celebrate another one! Perhaps I should tell my husband - he may go and buy more flowers! lol

Second Sunday of May

Second Sunday of May

It's Mother's Day here tomorrow as well. Restaurants will be packed, but we've already made reservations to have lunch at the club, but since my mum doesn't want to join us because she hasn't been feeling too well lately, it will only be me, Robert and Bruna. My relationship with mine is a bit stormy, but she's a good mother in general. I also want to wish you all a Happy Mother's Day. We'll be phoning my mother in law too even though in Britain they celebrate it on a different day. When is Father's Day over there, by the way? Here it's on the second Sunday of August.

Wow!!

Wow!!

First I would like to say Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms and Dads. If not for the dads there wouldn't be moms, right?

Second, I would like to thank all of you for the Mother's Day wishes. I am mom to two little boys (and one big boy, I LOVE YOU JEFF!!)

Finally, Gina your poem is very touching. I am sure your mother was very proud of you as she listened from Heaven.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend everyone!! :D

The past few weeks, I have found myself shopping, picking items up in stores, thinking of things I could get Mom for Mother's Day. Then I remember that she's not with us this May.

Tomorrow will be bittersweet. I'm thankful to have my children, but I sure wish I had my mommy.

For those of you with moms still living, could you give them two hugs? One from you, and one from me. :)

My mom was a night owl like me (or I am a night owl like she was :D ). I used to call her each year at midnight to be the first to wish her Happy Mother's day. Right now I am feeling so strange thinking there is something I forgot to do.

Sending out hugs and Happy Mother's day wishes to my mom and all the women of the world. We are all moms whether in reality or simply spirit.

Happy Mothers Day to all of you moms and mommies. I hope you have a Very Special Day!
Take Care
