On this, the first day of Mother's day weekend, I wanted to start a tribute thread to all moms. Although my mom has been gone for 2 years, I still honor her on Mother's day.
I hope it doesn't sound morbid but I wanted to share a poem I wrote for her eulogy. It was a poem to honor and remember her life so I think it is fitting for Mother's day. Since I think of all of you as part of a new family, I wanted to introduce you to part of mine. Mom passed away from complications due to Alzheimer's, thus the references to her "vacant eyes" and Mapleknoll, the extended care facility where she lived her last years.
I miss you Mom. Happy Mother's Day.
To Mom:
We grew up never knowing
Where our lives would lead
But we never worried
You gave us all we?d need
You made us beautiful birthday cakes
And Easter baskets filled with treats
Christmas time was magical
With love impossible to beat
We spent days at Coney Island
Had picnics in the park
we had snowball fights in winter
told scary stories in the dark
And as we grew you helped us through
Those awkward teenage years
Were not too harsh when we came home late
Soothed the painful dating tears
You welcomed our spouses with open arms
And then you surprised us all
And moved off by yourself to Florida
To answer some longtime beckoning call
You returned back home to Cincy
To be near grandchildren as they came
Visited Hawaii as you always dreamed
Found your brother and your name
Then life seemed to deal a blow
You seemed to drift away
You had to move to Mapleknoll
And struggle day by day
So we visited and wondered
Were you still inside
Were there thoughts and smiles
Behind your vacant eyes
We hoped you danced through flowering fields
And caught the butterflies
And sat beside the waterfalls
Behind your vacant eyes
We?d sit and wish one more time we could
come inside the world you came to know
and find you playing by the stream
or making angels in the snow.
We wanted to be assured
You really were elsewhere
Than trapped inside the quiet shell
We watched from within our chair
But we also knew you and how you loved
To smile, hug and dream each day
And when we would remember
We would know you were okay
So Mom we miss your smiles
We miss your quirky ways
We miss the chocolate chip cookies and apple pies
you made on baking days.
But we know you finally are at peace
And painfull as it is to not have you here
We see you and Dad off in the distance
Waiting for us someday to join you there
