I thought that I would post some symptoms on improper thyroid fuctions. I know that after my surgery my thyroid was not functioning properly and I am still on a prescription for it. There are some new OTC remedies available that also help with weight loss but I am not posting to talk about them. If any of the symptoms below hit home you might want to see your Doctor about a Thyroid test:

You have problems losing weight and seem to gain weight without reason.
You feel tired and weak.
You are depressed and moody.
Your hair is dry and rough.
You become cold easily; being in cold weather is painful.
You are often constipated.
Your skin is dry and pale.
You are easily irritated.
You have problems remembering and concentrating.
You have irregular menstrual cycles.
You have a decreased interest in sex.
You have muscle and/or joint pain.
Your fingernails may be thin and brittle.
Your face, hands, and feet are often swollen or puffy.

Randy,
LOL...I have ALL the symptoms you listed, plus thinning hair. Every time they check my hormone levels, it comes back in the normal range, so they haven't adjusted my synthroid. However, I have a new PCP now, I will see if he goes strictly by the "normal" range, or also considers how the patient feels.

Even after having been on Synthroid for about a dozen years, I have many of those symptoms. The doc keeps me on the slow side of normal, to reduce wear on my heart (he said) and to reduce the loss of calcium that can come from a too-high dose.

Has anyone found anything better than Synthroid?

I have hypothyroid too, and one of the more noticable things that changed for me after starting synthroid, is I had been having lots of hair in the shower for the past few years, i thought it was "normal, 40 YO female hormones things, pretty soon after starting synthroid was, I hardly lost any hair. So if you seem to be losing more hair in the shower, tell your doc and ask if it could be thyroid related
I was hoping when I started it, I would drop the last 10 pounds I gained, but darn, it stayed.

I am one who has all the symptoms and even a mom who had thyroid cancer but all my blood tests keep coming back normal so go figure. Maybe it takes awhile between symptoms and level changes?????????

Sadly, when I was reading an expert gland doctor's reply to a similar weight question years ago, his reply was something like: thyroid medications don't seem to help with that issue:(.

January is Thyroid Awareness Month

http://thyroid.about.com/

Mary Shoman, herself a thyroid patient for many years, is the thyroid guide on About.com. She has been fighting the medical community to get the best diagnostic tests, treatments, etc, has written many books on the subject and has been a frequent guest on radio and TV talk shows.

For years the normal lab values have been set at .5 to 5.0 (TSH) but the endocrinologists have now found that it should be .3 to 3.0 so that many people who were thought to be in norman range are now recognized as being hypothyroid. (Unfortunately many doctors do not keep up with new findings) It has long been her contention that the TSH is not enough to go by but T3 and T4 values should be tested also. Many who test normal are subclinically hypothyroid and need to be treated. Many are thought to be normal who also are found to have very high antibody levels, have Hashimotos disease.

When I was first started on meds I was given Synthroid but then my endocrinologist switched me to Levoxyl because the Synthroid manufacturer was in a fight with the govt. over overpricing, etc. Shortly after that I asked to be changed to Unithroid which has an excellent record of standardized potency at a more reasonable price.

My main complaints were fatigue, really terrible constipation:mad:  (all your body functions slow down), and my once very thick hair was quickly being flushed down the shower (too bad my internist didn't recognize this as a symptom  )

Warning: if your GP says you are "normal" get a copy of your blood work and don't take his/her word for it!!
