Last Wednesday I had my six month and yearly echo at my cardiologist office. My echo came back that my enlarged heart was enlarging even more and that it was time to start planning for a valve replacement. I had a lot of prayer go up for me. My very caring doctor had me consult with another doctor at Emory University Hospital on Monday afternoon. They repeated the echo and also did 3 D echo. They give me an injection (bubble test?) and found a very small hole in my heart. On Tuesday afternoon the consulting doctor called with the result that their measurement were changed only a bit from last years my and that it is still not time for surgery. I was told to follow up in six months with another echo. I am so happy because my body and mind needs time to rest and heal. In May I was diagnosis with breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy in June with radiation in July and August. In September I started with hormonal therapy. With this being breast cancer awareness month please remember to make sure you or your love one always have their yearly mammogram done. My cancer mass was about the size of a pea and yes it was my mammogram that picked it up. Because of the small size and other test coming back good I did not have to have chemotherapy. With cancer your team of doctor will not leave you alone. In November I finally have no doctor?s appointments on my calendar. With breast cancer there are so many follow up visits and lab work. With heart surgery it seem like you soon return to a normal life.

Rebecca - seems we have alot in common. I had breast cancer 15 years ago, and am now getting AVR surgery on Monday. I can tell you that life after breast cancer is good! I had a mastectomy and chemo - lost my hair and all. It wasn't fun to go thru, but I made it. You are so lucky that you found it early enough that you don't need chemo. The first year - lots of appts, but it all for your own good - don't want anything sneaking in on you. AFter the first year, I think it goes down to 6 months. I love my oncologist, so it was never a drag for me to go to him. Now I still go once a year just to check in with him - he feels like family now!
I hope that you can wait a little before the heart surgery - you could use a rest!

Rebecca,
I'm happy to hear that you will be able to postpone your surgery awhile longer. You have had a rough go of it, but it sounds like you're handling it very well.
I will keep you in my prayers.
Mary
